Best inline skates for beginners

  • Low price, good value
  • Fast, supportive
  • Suitable for beginners
  • Sometimes uncomfortable

The Rollerblade Bladerunner Pro 78 budget-priced inline skates, available in both men's and women's models, receive slightly lower marks than we'd usually include as a "Best Reviewed." However they stand out head and shoulders above the crowd in their price range, as the exception to the rule that you get what you pay for with inline skates.

A professional review on recommends the Pro 78 as the ideal entry-level skate for a beginner on a budget. Although they're not high-performance and a few users complained about the boots being uncomfortable or hard to get on or off, most user reviews on Buzzillions indicate that the Pro 78s are fun, fast, stylish and reasonably supportive, comfortable and lightweight. Overall, that's much more than you could usually ask for at less than $100, so the Bladerunner Pro receives our pick for Best Reviewed in the budget price range.

The men's and women's versions of the Bladerunner Pro each receive separate reviews from Although the reviewer doesn't compare the skates to other models, he does briefly discuss their basic features and gives a clear and positive -- although qualified -- recommendation in the end. The Buzzillions user reviews do list a few minor complaints, but are still generally positive and reasonably well-articulated.

Although Steve Kopitz, owner and skate buyer for, doesn't directly compare the Pro 78 to other models, he makes a clear recommendation for the Pro 78 as a good entry-level skate, before going on to note that you should upgrade to a higher-end model if you decide to continue skating. The Pro 78 also received decent user reviews on, but because those were reported to Buzzillions, they're counted as part of the Buzzillions source.

Buzzillions aggregates user reviews from around the Internet, making it easier to spot trends in the otherwise scantily reviewed inline skate market. The Bladerunner Pro 78 has three Buzzillions entries and receives slightly lower marks than we'd usually count toward a Best Reviewed pick: 5 stars (from only two reviews) and 4.4 stars (from seven reviews) for the men's models, and an average of 4.1 stars (from 8 reviews) for the women's model. Nonetheless the reviews are largely positive, citing a fun, easy-to-use skate. A few users complain that the skates were uncomfortable and bulky, but a larger percentage of users feel the skates were supportive, comfortable and lightweight. Positive opinions are generally at least twice as prevalent as the corresponding negatives. Although the Pro 78 certainly isn't a top-of-the-line skate, it stands out as a decent skate among the lower-quality skates usually in this price range, and an economical way for beginners to try the sport.
