Buzz Away Extreme

Pros
  • Long-lasting protection
  • Non-DEET formula
  • Effective against ticks
Cons
  • Reapplication is necessary
  • Smell can be strong
  • Should not be used on babies

Bottom line

Buzz Away Extreme is a non-DEET spray protecting against mosquitoes, gnats, ticks, black flies and no-see-ums for at least a four to eight hours, though reviewers say you should reapply every few hours. Many report it's especially effective against ticks. Reviewers report the scent is tolerable and the formula isn't too greasy.

Performance

Keeps mosquitoes, ticks and other bugs away. Buzz Away Extreme is an herbal-based spray that repels mosquitoes, gnats, flies, ticks and fleas. Reviewers give it a thumbs-up for performance in wooded and humid regions. Several reviewers note that Buzz Away is especially effective at repelling ticks, and that they weren't afraid to reapply liberally (unlike with DEET repellents) because it's a natural product.

Consumers and the manufacturer (which markets Buzz Away as lasting for eight hours) recommend reapplying every three hours or so for maximum effectiveness against mosquitoes, however. For protection against ticks, reapply at least every two hours.

Feel and smell

Herbal scented spray that absorbs well. Many reviewers say Buzz Away Extreme has a distinctive, but not necessarily unpleasant, smell. The reviewer at Grist.org recommends Buzz Away over a handful of other non-DEET products, comparing the smell to a "candy cane, with its sweet pepperminty scent. It goes on clear, and doesn't leave an oily film." Other reviewers on Amazon.com describe the smell as "a combination of cedar and sandalwood" or "a strong odor of geranial, citronella and mint." Consumers advise using a generous amount of spray and rubbing it in well for maximum protection. Many say the product isn't very greasy.
