German-developed G Data Internet Security is a newcomer to the vast North American security suite market, but the software is already a reviewer favorite in some categories. G Data uses two separate antivirus engines (one from BitDefender and one from Avast!) to offer some of the highest malware detection and removal rates, according to independent testing. Reviewers are also generally pleased with G Data Internet Security's user interface, which is extremely customizable for power users, but can also be very hands-off for novices. The low price is another point in G Data's favor. However, experts admit that these advantages have trade-offs: G Data's system scans are very slow, and the program takes up a lot of random access memory (RAM). Also, reviewers point out that G Data Internet Security 2010's firewall, anti-spam and parental controls are unexceptional. Norton Internet Security 2010 (Discontinued) is more expensive, but provides somewhat more balanced protection and is easier on system resources. Furthermore, rebates are often available for Norton.
G Data Internet Security gets modest, though not extensive, coverage. PC World and Britain's IT Reviews give the program the highest marks, and also discuss its features in the most in-depth, comparative manner. PC Pro and About.com also look at G Data, but their reviews are cursory and less enthusiastic.
