Although most malware targets Windows, experts say computers running the Macintosh OS are vulnerable as well. Macs that are networked to Windows systems can act as carriers for viruses, and Intel Macs running Windows on a separate partition need to be secured in the same fashion as other Windows installations. Intego makes Mac-native security software that receives plaudits. The company's VirusBarrier program was known for catching plenty of viruses while taking up very little space or processing power, and NetBarrier provided Internet security.
Intego's VirusBarrier X6 combines these two programs into a complete Mac security suite. Functions include a two-way firewall, phishing and spyware protection, and "dynamic code monitoring" to detect new malware threats. There are minor interface improvements too. Users and experts say they are pleased to note VirusBarrier X6's lower price, but this is offset by a more restrictive subscription policy. Intego VirusBarrier X6 Dual Protection is slightly more expensive, but it protects against Windows and Mac-based malware. A more complete Internet security solution, Intego SecurityBarrier X6, also adds parental controls, antispam and file backup features. However, it's not received any professional reviews, and it's not had very much user feedback.
Coverage of VirusBarrier X6 is scarce because most reviewers focus on Windows security software. Macworld reviews Intego's earlier editions, VirusBarrier X5 and NetBarrier X5, and provides a preview of the X6 suite. Download.com's editors don't review VirusBarrier, but users post their own critiques of the previous X5 and the X6 versions.
Roughly 80 Download.com users provide feedback for Intego's VirusBarrier X6. A few also discuss VirusBarrier X5, the previous version. Virus detection, as well as the program's negligible effect on system performance, is commended. Some users say the price is too high, and others say the software slows down their computer.

In this older review, Macworld's Scott McNulty calls Intego's VirusBarrier X5, the predecessor to the Intego VirusBarrier X6, "the gold standard" when it comes to finding and eliminating viruses and other malware on Mac operating systems. McNulty says he is especially impressed by the program's speed and light footprint, though he does critique the odd interface and the price.

Nicholas Bonsack provides a short preview of Intego's VirusBarrier X6. He explains that the updated version includes NetBarrier to create an Internet security suite. Furthermore, Bonsack points out that the price of both the software license and of the yearly subscription has become more reasonable for the new edition.

Chris Pepper reviews Intego NetBarrier X5 for Macworld, a discontinued product. Its functionality has been rolled into the Intego VirusBarrier X6 to create a security suite for Mac users. He says the program is easy for novices to use, but it's still of value to experts. However, Pepper also notes that the firewall and privacy settings can block legitimate traffic.
