Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 (*Est. $25 for 3 PCs) is a comprehensive Internet security suite that is continually rated as among the best in the industry. It has strong protection features, particularly the parental controls and the tools for financial data protection, and presents these features in an easy-to-use interface in basic language that even a beginner can fully understand. It's a bit slower than its competitors, but reviewers agree that the extremely high level of protection it offers more than makes up for this.
Straightforward. Reviewers agree that, despite its set of advanced features, the Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 interface is easy to understand and navigate. The lack of jargon ensures that even beginners can easily find their way around the software. The installation is quick and painless, requiring users to click through just four screens and register the product by entering their email address.
The installer removes any security programs you already have that may conflict with Kaspersky and immediately removes any malware it detects already hiding in your computer. Kaspersky provides a variety of help and support avenues, including online forums, chat and articles, though the hours for chat and telephone options are limited to Monday through Friday.
Extensive parental controls. Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 comes loaded with features, many of them advanced tools. In addition to the regular tools for scanning and detecting malware and repairing your computer, this software offers extensive parental controls, which are better than most suites. Reviewers report that you can set up different user profiles for each child, and you can control how long each child plays games and when and for how long each can access the Internet.
A useful feature for those who conduct financial transactions online is Safe Money, which provides special protection and additional security for online transactions, guaranteeing that the user goes to the real banking site and not an imposter website. The virtual keyboard protects from keyloggers by encrypting keystrokes when you enter a password or enter other valuable information. Other notable features include an ad-blocking option, anti-spam and anti-phishing tools, and a geo-filter to block content from particular locations.
Accurate, but a little slow. Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 consistently ranks in the top three in comparisons of Internet security software suites, and its dependably strong performance is a large part of its success. The software's ability to block malware attacks varies in tests, from 94.4 percent at PCWorld to 100 percent at Expert Reviews. At AV-Test.org, the go-to antivirus testing facility, Kaspersky Internet Security wins a rating of Excellent in protection, repair and usability, for scoring between 90 and 100 percent in all the tests.
Seth Rosenblatt of CNET remarks that "Kaspersky historically doesn't focus on speedy scans as much as its competitors," and this is borne out by the effect of Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 on computer speed. Several reviews report considerable lag time when running the software, though it is faster than average when running manual scans.
