Referred to as one of the best sounding portable iPod speakers on the market and a "ghettoblaster for the iPhone age," the Altec Lansing Mix iMT800 Digital Boombox possesses a retro design that many reviewers simply hate. These critics say the design is cheap-looking and "aesthetically depressing," but nearly all experts agree that the Altec Lansing Mix has stellar sound quality. The speaker is technically portable -- it sports integrated handles and can be powered by eight D-size batteries or electrical power -- but, like the boomboxes of yesteryear, it's large and heavy (10 pounds without batteries). There are certainly lighter portable iPod speakers available, but reviewers say they can't touch the Altec Lansing Mix when it comes to sound quality.

The Mix is certified to work with the iPhone, so you can still receive calls or texts while music is playing without the risk of interference. Other nifty features include two line-in ports to attach additional iPods or MP3 players, a digital FM radio and a side-firing subwoofer. If you need a more portable iPod speaker, we also found great reviews for the lightweight Logitech Pure-Fi Anywhere 2 (*Est. $120). This speaker is also certified to work with the iPhone, and it weighs less than 3 pounds.

Several professional reviewers test the Altec Lansing Mix iMT800, including iLounge.com, CNET, PCMag.com and iProng magazine. Each is incredibly detailed, but iLounge.com manages to pack the most information into its photo-illustrated review. iLounge.com is also the most critical of the Mix's design. CultofMac.com has a brief, less-detailed review. The Altec Lansing Mix iMT800 has not yet accumulated user reviews.

Jeremy Horwitz is more critical than most of the Altec Lansing's boombox design. He describes the design as "aesthetically depressing" and "groan-inspiring," but acknowledges that the sound quality is impressive -- "one of the most powerful and sonically impressive we've tested," he says. Overall, the Mix earns his recommendation.
