The Chestnut Hill Sound George is a popular bookshelf iPod speaker system that was one of the first to offer excellent sound quality. The George comes with several well-liked features, such as an AM/FM tuner, an alarm clock, a USB port that enables the speakers to receive software updates, an audio port that will accommodate 3.5 mm cables, and a pre-amp output to connect with a larger system. However, the most loved feature by reviewers is the remote. It's actually a detachable control panel that gives users access to all the speaker functions (except the subwoofer) wirelessly. However, there are some downsides to the George -- mainly that the speakers lack a dock connector port and video output, two features that most would expect to be included with speakers of this price class. Online availability for the Chestnut Hill Sound George is getting slim, although you can still find it at some retailers. A newer iPod speaker, the Creative ZiiSound D5 (*Est. $160) also gets very high ratings for its wireless design.
Three sources that feature the most in-depth expert reviews of the Chestnut Hill Sound George are iLounge.com, CNET and Macworld. These sites all have plenty of comparative and critical information on the George. However, CNET has a particularly detailed review compared with iLounge.com and Macworld, and is also slightly more critical. Laptop Magazine and PCMag.com also have strong comparative reviews of the George. However, they are brief, substantially less detailed than the above-mentioned review sources, and tend to focus on the George's positive attributes.

1. CNET
CNET editor David Carnoy gives the George accolades and declares that the sound quality is in a class of its own. Carnoy also likes the inventive remote control, upgradeable firmware, AM/FM clock radio with dual alarms and 24 presets. However, Carnoy questions the George's lofty price tag and critiques the sound quality, saying "it doesn't handle heavy bass all that well."

2. iLounge.com
Jeremy Horwitz deems the George worthy of its price tag and the clear-cut leader in sound among iPod speaker systems currently on the market. Contrary to the CNET review, iLounge.com states that "bass and midrange performance are especially impressive." Horwitz mentions the lack of some advanced features but says that most users won't know what they're missing.

Macworld also gives the George very high reviews. The only downside that's mentioned in this review is the high price, but MacWorld, like other reviewers, determines the George to be worth the money.

4. Laptop MagazineDetails/Subscribe
Laptop Magazine raves about the George's sound quality, and Russ Fischer says that the innovative remote is perhaps its biggest selling point. Fischer, who has virtually no complaints about the speaker dock, ultimately gives the George an Editors' Choice award and claims it's "hands-down the best iPod speaker dock money can buy."

Similar to the Laptop Magazine review, PCMag.com primarily discusses the George's positive features, such as its impeccable sound quality. Reviewer Tim Gideon also gives the George an Editors' Choice award and calls it the "king of the iPod dock mountain." However, Gideon does say that the speakers are a bit "plain looking."
