Among wireless speaker options, the Bluetooth-enabled Soundfreaq Platform 2 offers respectable sound quality and fairly easy operation. The Soundfreaq speaker is relatively small and light, making it easy to move from room to room. And if you buy a second unit, you can get even sound with its stereo separation capability. One criticism from reviewers is that the Soundfreaq doesn't come with its own remote; you must use their mobile app (Android, Apple) to control playback.
Simple controls, seamless Bluetooth operation. The Sound Platform 2 has a very basic button array that consists of source selection, volume and controls to fine tune the equalizer, enable surround sound and pair with Bluetooth. DigitalTrends.com's Ryan Waniata says that while the speaker's three equalizer presets simplify the set-up process, it may leave something to be desired for true audiophiles. The stereo-separation controls are where the Platform 2 really stands out, allowing the user to pair two platforms together for immeasurably great sound.
One chief complaint amongst experts is that since the Platform 2 doesn't come with an actual remote, the Soundfreaq App, which you must download, is the main control for the unit. Jeremy Horwitz from iLounge.com says the app could "really use a complete UI overhaul and additional functionality." Digital Trends' Waniata also notes that the FM transmitter feature has a noticeable lag when switching from station to station.
Sleek, lightweight and unisex design. The Sound Platform 2 sports a minimal design that Horwitz says can "sit in pretty much any room without looking out of place." Weighing slightly over 6 pounds, it is compact and light enough to suffice as a travel speaker, without sacrificing too much in regards to performance or sound. However, the Soundfreaq does not run on battery power; the company has said it will soon release an optional rechargeable battery for purchase.
Clear sound; impressive stereo separation. Experts test the Sound Platform 2 with a range of musical volumes and styles, generally with similar results. Mashable.com's Charlie White appreciates the "thumping bass," as well as an impressive midrange. DigitalTrends.com' Ryan Waniata notes an impressive range of clarity for "such a small package," though his tests reveal that the drivers tend to get strained at higher volume levels, sometimes reaching a slightly tinny quality. However, when run in DSS (Dolby Surround Sound) mode, the Sound Platform 2's capabilities are doubled. Wainita's test of the Platform's DSS mode resulted in a "fluttering wall of sound" while iLounge.com's Jeremy Horwitz says the stereo separation places you in "the middle of what feels like a really good concert."
