The Kelty Speedster Swivel-Deuce is a double stroller with a swivel wheel that can be locked in place for jogging. Experts say it's a better choice for those who are joggers, as opposed to long-distance road runners. However, some owners say it performs well for them even on long runs. For a double stroller, it's not all that heavy at 26 pounds, and it has a 100-pound weight limit. Users report it's comfortable for their children, especially bigger children, and easy to push.
Good safety features, but a recent recall. Experts and owners say the Kelty Speedster Swivel-Deluxe has all the safety features one needs on a jogging stroller -- dual five-point padded harness, runaway leash, reflective accents and an alert bell. The brakes are not linked, they must be locked individually. It does not have a handle brake for slowing on hills, something most jogging strollers do include as a safety feature.
On February 2012, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a voluntary recall of all Kelty Speedster Swivel-Deuce strollers due to an issue with the front wheel coming loose and causing the stroller to tip over. Several injuries to children and parents have been reported. The recall includes all single and double Speedster Swivel jogging strollers manufactured from January 2010 through February 2012. If you own one of the affected strollers, you should stop using it immediately and contact Kelty to receive free updated assembly and maintenance instructions.
Not the easiest fold. To fold and unfold the Kelty Speedster Swivel-Deuce requires releasing the two clips on the side of the stroller, something that users say is difficult to do and can result in pinched fingers. However, once you get the hang of it, owners say it gets easier. It is a two-handed fold, and the recline is two-handed as well. It gets good reviews for ease of pushing and locks when folded, but it's a manual strap lock. Runners say it's easy to push while jogging and feels surprisingly lightweight for its size. Reviewers say the Deuce's other features, like the swivel/fixed wheel and the handle bar adjustment are simple.
Nice convenience features for joggers. Reviewers praise the many convenience features on the Kelty Speedster Swivel-Deuce, especially the storage. In addition to a large, under seat basket, it has two seat back storage pockets with key fobs and mesh water bottle holders. The canopy is large, but it does not work independently; it is either over both children or neither. One reviewer also notes that, when open, the canopy sticks straight up and you can't see your children in the stroller over it.
Experts say this stroller is best used as a jogging stroller for shorter jogs. It has a swivel wheel that can be fixed, and experts say distance runners are better served with a dedicated, fixed-wheel stroller. However, owner reviews indicate that this stroller performs quite well on long runs, and several reviewers praise its off-road capabilities. One expert review says the stroller pulls to the side of the heavier child, so it may be a better choice for parents with children of similar weights and sizes. Although the tires are air-filled, the stroller does not include a tire pump, which came as a surprise to one reviewer who damaged an inner tube pushing it to a neighbor's house to borrow their pump. The handlebars are adjustable for parents of different heights.
One issue with the Kelty Speedster Swivel-Deuce is that it is wide, which may limit its use as an everyday stroller, even with the swivel-wheel option. At least one reviewer had to return it because it didn't fit through some doorways. As with most double strollers, it's also bulky when folded so may not be the best choice for parents who have a smaller car. The wheels pop off for a smaller footprint, so that may help.
The Kelty Speedster Swivel-Deuce is recommended for children from 6 months -- or older if they can't yet sit unassisted -- to 100 pounds total. The seat is described by reviewers as comfortable and well-padded, and it has a slight recline.
Although it has a suggested retail price of nearly $500, close to that of high-end strollers, almost all reviewers say they were able to find the stroller at a deep discount, and most owners agree that it is a great buy for the price. The Speedster Swivel is also available as a single stroller, the Kelty Speedster Swivel-Deluxe (**MSRP $400).
An amazing warranty. All Kelty products are covered for life, excluding normal wear and tear, natural hazards, abuse or alteration. Kelty also gets great reviews for its responsive customer service.
1. Running Times
Review credibility: Very Good Only three strollers are highlighted in this roundup of top double jogging strollers, including the Kelty Speedster Swivel-Deuce. The strollers were tested by two running parents and their two children. Wolpert says the Deuce is light and agile, and the harness system is very secure. She notes it's a "less than ideal experience" because it tends to pull to the side of the heavier child.
Review: A Runner's Guide to Double Jogging Strollers, By Katie Wolpert, Not dated
Review credibility: Very Good The Kelty Speedster Swivel-Deuce stroller gets an overall rating of 3 stars out of 5 in a handful of reviews. However, the reviews are detailed and thoughtful. Feedback is mixed, with a couple of reviewers saying it's not for serious runners, but another one saying she logs a lot of miles with it. Most agree that it's hard to fold, and the levers that have to be released are a pinch hazard. Owners do like the plethora of convenience features, but one had to return the stroller because it was too wide to fit through most doorways where she lives.
Review: Kelty Speedster Swivel - Deuce, Contributors to BackCountry.com, As of October 2012
Review credibility: Good Johanna, a blogger and mother of two and one on the way, reviews the Kelty Speedster Swivel-Deuce not as a jogging stroller, but as a stroller for getting around the challenging terrain in her rural environment while pushing two children and heavily pregnant. The review is detailed and includes pros and cons with informative photos. Unlike most reviewers, she says the Deuce is easy to fold, but it's so bulky once it's folded she's having trouble figuring out where to store it. Other than that, she says it's super easy to push and comfortable for her children.
