Bottom Line

Unlike most home karaoke machines, the Memorex Singstand 2 MKS-SS2 doesn't include a CD+G player. Instead, it plays MP3 tracks from virtually any MP3 player, smartphone or tablet. It's a fairly bare-bones machine with small speakers and no built-in display screen. However, owners find it very easy to set up and use and also very sturdy, two features that make it great for kids.

Covers the basics. The Memorex Singstand 2 is an all-in one unit with a microphone, a stand, two small speakers in the base, and a cradle for your phone or tablet (which must also serve as a display screen, since there's none built in). A universal line-in lets it connect to virtually any device, and there's a separate input for a guitar or keyboard so you can play along with the music as well. The machine also has a few basic vocal effects, like echo and auto voice control (AVC). There's a jack to plug in a second microphone, but only one is included.

  • Works with a wide variety of devices
  • Sturdy construction
  • Easy to set up and use
  • Vocal effects
  • Weak speakers
  • No CD+G player

Setup and use

Ideal for kids. Most owners who review the Singstand 2 at and say that kids (from toddlers to teens) absolutely love it. One feature that makes it great for kids is that it's so easy to set up and use; one owner at says, "We put it together in minutes (without instructions)." However, some reviewers think this karaoke player isn't ideal for adults because the built-in speakers and microphone produce such poor sound -- inaudible at low volumes and distorted at high ones. There is an audio output that should make it possible to connect to an external sound system, but Memorex doesn't explain how.

Problems are few and far between. Both professionals and users describe the Singstand 2 as ruggedly built. We found only a few scattered complaints about durability in user reviews, and there's no particular problem that pops up repeatedly. Memorex backs the Singstand 2 with a 90-day warranty, which appears to be pretty standard for a home karaoke machine. However, one user at warns that the warranty does not cover shipping costs for replacement parts. Also, a couple of users who had problems complain that repeated emails to Memorex's customer support went unanswered.
