OXO Good Grips Professional

Pros
  • Economical
  • Full tang
  • Sharp
Cons
  • Large handle
  • Less sturdy blades

The Oxo Good Grips Professional line of knives is unusual because of they have thick handles made from a soft nonslip material. Some reviewers say the handles are comfortable, but others find them too large. Although the blades are sharp initially, some reviewers say their lower-quality steel won't hold an edge well. The Oxo Good Grips Professional line is not dishwasher safe, and some owners say the blades and handles were damaged when they attempted to clean them this way. While some reviewers do appreciate the variety of cutlery options included in this set, many experts note that most kitchen chores can be completed with one of three knives. They say these larger kits are often more about quantity rather than quality, and most cooks are better served by selecting smaller collections of knives. For the same price, you could get a smaller set of Victorinox Swiss Classic knives (*Est. $65 for three) , which get excellent overall reviews.

Both Cook's Illustrated and ConsumerReports.org review these knives, but Cook's Illustrated magazine only covers the paring knife. The santoku is mentioned in a review from New York magazine, where it receives some criticism from Chef Masayoshi "Masa" Takayama. Many detailed owner reviews are available on Amazon.com, and there are a handful of reviews at Epinions.com.
