Kitchen Scales
by Editors of Choice
Our Assessment

This review covers nine digital and six mechanical scales (of which four are continuous weighing and two are non-continuous weighing). Editors recommend a digital food scale for making bread and for monitoring your calorie intake. The second-place Salter 1004SSDR appears to the same kitchen scale known in this country as the Salter 11-Pound Square Stainless Scale, but the scales differ significantly in price. The Breville Ikon scale, which earns a fairly high overall rating, is available in the United States.

Our Assessment

The OXO Good Grips is the top-rated food scale here, with about 20 perfect customer reviews. Many scales earn high ratings, but in just one or two reviews. Among food scales garnering five or more reviews, the Escali 115P Pennon Multifunctional Scale, which has a round platform, is a customer favorite. The Escali Primo earns an average rating of 4.5 stars in more than 350 reviews. The Soehnle Magnum Digital Scale and Salter 7-Pound Digital both get very low average ratings, with some owners calling these food scales unreliable.

Stand Aside, Rudolph: The Mouse Will Lead
by Marian Burros
Our Assessment

In this installment of Burros' annual holiday gift round-up, she recommends the Salter food scale because it "displays weights in ounces or in grams at the press of a button: no more tedious calculations for those who use foreign cookbooks or prefer to weigh ingredients." At an estimated $65, this scale is more expensive than most. We'd give this article a higher rating if we knew exactly which model Burros was reviewing.

Kitchen Scale Reviews

Our Assessment There aren't that many reviews for kitchen scales at Epinions.com. Most kitchen scales earn scores of three or four stars, but from only one review. The Salter Aquatronic Food Scale, which garners five reviews, is an exception. Owners say that the automatic shut-off feature is annoying and give it three stars out of five on average.
Brand Commentary
by Editors of DigitalScale.com
Our Assessment

This kitchen scale retailer includes long and very detailed commentary about each scale brand, complete with some biting criticism of some scale importers. The site's owners publish feedback from manufacturers, as well as their rebuttals. While this makes for entertaining reading, we wish this information was a bit better organized, so consumers could tell at a glance which scales outperform others.
