Lenovo's ThinkPad laptops have long been a reviewer favorite for business users, and the ultraportable Lenovo ThinkPad X220 is no exception. This laptop, which starts at 2.9 pounds in its base configuration, has the traditional ThinkPad design, but it includes Intel's second-generation Core processors for a noticeable performance boost. The laptop can be upgraded before purchase, but the base model comes with a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5-2520M processor, 4 GB of RAM, 320 GB hard drive and integrated Intel graphics. Most reviewers test an upgraded unit that costs around $1,300, complete with speedier Core i5 or i7 CPUs, more RAM and an optional slice battery that adds some weight, but also lots and lots of extra run time. A host of pre-configured versions are also available from retailers.

Reviewers say the Lenovo ThinkPad X220 retains much of what makes ThinkPads great -- a durable design, industry-leading keyboard and a matte display that has excellent viewing angles and crisp images. Performance is strong for all mainstream business tasks, including some video editing, although the integrated graphics can't handle gaming or other graphics-intensive projects. Where the Lenovo ThinkPad X220 really excels, however, is its battery life. The standard 6-cell battery lasts for nearly nine hours in most tests, but the optional slice battery (combined with the optional 9-cell battery) has runtimes approaching 20 hours.

Reviewers have very few complaints about the Lenovo ThinkPad X220, but some think the palm rest is too short and uncomfortable. The touchpad can be overly sensitive, and some reviewers say the classic ThinkPad design could use a refresh. While the ThinkPad X220 is well regarded, many reviewers find lots to like for business users in the HP EliteBook 2560p (*Est. $1,100 and up). It's a little bit heavier at 3.6 pounds, but housed in a chassis that's ruggedized to withstand abuse -- including abuse from the elements -- and loaded with good performance and business-friendly features such as face-recognition security software and a spill-resistant keyboard.

Numerous reviewers evaluate the Lenovo ThinkPad X220, with the best analysis coming from PCMag.com, Laptop Magazine, CNET, ComputerShopper.com and NotebookReview.com. These reviews are thorough and appropriately critical when necessary. Shorter reviews from Engadget.com, Wired and PC World are also helpful.
