The Brother HL-5280DW adds Wi-Fi networking and an LCD status display to its solid list of standard features. It has 1200-by-1200-dpi resolution and prints more than 20 text pages per minute in tests -- not as fast as the… zippiest laser printers, but good for its price range. According to calculations by PC World, cost of ownership is a low 2.2 cents per page. The Brother monochrome laser printer also includes an automatic duplexer for double-sided printing and ships with a full-capacity toner cartridge. Duty cycle is 20,000 pages per month, so it's better for small work groups. Options include additional paper trays and high-capacity toner cartridges, which help reduce running costs. The Brother HL-5280DW is compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux computers.

The Brother HL-2170W includes wired and wireless networking, but it otherwise lacks any business features or frills -- no… duplexing, low 600-dpi resolution and a lower 10,000 page-per-month duty cycle. Paper handling is good with this printer relative to its price class; the top bin holds 250 sheets of paper and there is a manual feeder that takes one page or envelope at a time on a straight path.
