The Best Laser Printers
by Tony Hoffman
Our Assessment

PC Magazine has devoted most of its recent attention to color and multifunction laser printers, but major monochrome models are still reviewed occasionally. The reviews are balanced, comparative and thorough. Detailed benchmark results show comparative speeds. Each printer is rated, and top models receive an Editors' Choice designation. This roundup covers all types of laser printers, and most of the printers included are Editors' Choice models. Of the mono lasers, the Lexmark T650N and Brother 2170W get high marks.

Is a Monochrome Laser Right for You?
by M. David Stone
Our Assessment In this roundup, PC Magazine's regular printer reviewer, M. David Stone, provides a good overview of four monochrome lasers from the last year with links to their full reviews. Three of them, the Brother 2170W, Samsung ML-2851ND and HP LaserJet P1505, were named Editors' Choice winners in their initial reviews.

Printers
by Editors of Computer Shopper (U.K.)
Our Assessment

U.K.'s Computer Shopper -- not affiliated with the U.S. magazine with the same name -- has reviewed a few monochrome laser printers in the last year. Generally, the site's reviews are very short, but concise and substantive. Comparisons are relevant and reviews are productive. Descriptions of text and image quality are detailed. Printer reviews are all mixed together in the archive, making it difficult to browse for monochrome lasers alone.

Laser Printer Reviews
by Felisa Yang, Justin Yu
Our Assessment

CNet.com regularly reviews new laser printers. The reviews are satisfactorily comparative and Felisa Yang does a fine job of positioning each printer. Reviews are overly focused on features, though, and design and speed are evaluated before print quality is even addressed. While the better reviewers attempt to measure cost of use, CNet relies on the manufacturers' number of pages per cartridge ratings. (The Choice magazine cost-of-use tests referenced below confirm that manufacturers' ratings may be conservative or liberal, but aren't realistic.) No model reviewed in the past year is honored as an Editors' Choice.

Monochrome Laser Printer Reviews
by Simon Williams
Our Assessment

U.K. website Trusted Reviews is one of the most prolific reviewers of all types of printers, including about 15 monochrome laser printers this year alone. Testing is shallow, however, and no proof of text or graphics quality is provided. Speed is measured and cost of use is reported, but we aren't certain if Simon Williams attempts to calculate the cost-of-use figure or uses the manufacturers' claims. The reviews are balanced, occasionally comparative, objective and performance-oriented.

Test: Laser Printers
by Editors of Choice
Our Assessment

Choice is a not-for-profit Australian publication that is similar to Consumer Reports in the U.S. The magazine's editors review a dozen inexpensive monochrome laser printers in this comparison test, but since the models are no longer available, Choice's listings are only directly useful for after-market buyers or for general interest. Print quality is the most important consideration and each laser printer is scored and ranked. Another chart compares measured cost of use. Editors say cost-of-use differences are drastic and should be considered as much as the initial purchase price.

Laser Printers
by Editors of Personal Computer World
Our Assessment

U.K. magazine Personal Computer World covers a good selection of modestly priced laser printers, most of which are also sold in the U.S. The reviews are short and only generally comparative, but substantive. Overall and subcategory ratings provide some distinctions, but none of the subcategories cover any aspect of performance. No documentation is provided. No recent monochrome laser printer earns a Recommended designation, although Brother's HL-2035 and HL-2170W models receive high marks.

Inkjet Printer and Laser Printer Reviews
by Editors of IT Reviews
Our Assessment

U.K. website IT Reviews provides a steady flow of individual laser printer reviews. The reviews are short and non-comparative, and products aren't rated or ranked, yet this is an exceptional secondary source for information because other reviews neglect to state the true resolution of each printer. IT Reviews always does, and this specification makes a huge difference in fine print quality. Most reviewers either don't mention resolution or use the manufacturers' software-enhanced figures. Balance and objectivity are the other strengths of IT Reviews' reviews, and the HP LaserJet P4515n earns a Recommended seal.

Laser & Inkjet Printers
by Editors of ConsumerGuide.com
Our Assessment

Explanations of text and image quality at Consumer Guide are more descriptive than what most reviews provide. The reviews are easy to read and well balanced, though ratings provide the only method of comparison. Other shortcomings include the absence of documentation or explanation of test methodology. In this product category, Consumer Guide provides a good spectrum of ratings, but no mono lasers from the last year or so. The Lexmark E120n is selected as a Budget Buy, and the Brother HL-5250DN still stands as a Best Buy with an overall "excellent" rating.

Top 5 Monochrome Laser Printers
by Melissa Riofrio
Our Assessment

This chart ranks monochrome laser printers previously reviewed by PC World. Individual reviews are not comparative and are largely descriptive. Text and image quality are described, but not shown. However, testing is very good, and the test reports provide a basis for comparison. The reports show speed tests for a variety of documents and include the most comprehensive list of features and specifications we've found.

Printer Reviews
by Editors of Printer Showcase
Our Assessment

Printer Showcase is a retailer that reviews the printers it sells. The company may be motivated to give the best reviews to the printers with the highest profit margins, but the editors seem to make an effort to be objective, rating the printers on setup, print quality, speed, paper handling, supplies and service/reliability. The company claims to provide "unbiased real-world information" and service technicians, managers and salespeople all provide input.

Mono Laser Printers
by Robin Morris
Our Assessment PC Advisor's monochrome laser printer reviews have multiplied over the past year, making it a better resource than it was at the time of our previous update. Most models are ranked at about four out of five stars, although a careful reading of the reviews themselves makes it clear which printers the reviewer deems most impressive. Brother's HL-2140 and HL-5250DN are standouts.

Black & White Laser Printers
by Editors of PC World
Our Assessment Editors here reviewed a significant number of monochrome laser printers over the past year. Recommendations are lukewarm all around, and there is little discernible difference in ratings -- most receive around four out of five stars. However, there is some comparison between models in the written reviews. The best-rated models tend to be pro office models costing a few thousand dollars.

Laser Printers
by Peter Piazza
Our Assessment

Many of the single-product reviews here are for all-in-one multifunction machines and color lasers rather than monochrome printers. The Samsung ML-1630W appears to be the most recent review posted, though it's hard to tell since the reviews themselves are not dated. Each printer gets a short writeup that focuses on warm-up time and comments about output quality. (Note: ConsumerSearch is owned by About.com, but the two don't share an editorial affiliation.)

Printers -- Regular
by Editors of Consumer Reports
Our Assessment Only one monochrome laser printer is tested in Consumer Reports' latest printer roundup. All the other printers on the comparison chart are inkjets. Editors neither chart nor describe qualitative differences between models, and the recommended laser printer earns only a middling score.

Printers
by Editors of Which?
Our Assessment This British consumer magazine reviews only a few laser printers in its roundup review of all types of printers, and only one monochrome laser. That printer, the Samsung ML-2010, is selected as a Best Buy among the 85 other printers tested. However, the pros and cons of this particular model could well apply to many other mono lasers, making the recommendation less compelling.

Monochrome Laser Printers
by Contributors to NewEgg.com
Our Assessment PC World rates NewEgg.com as the best online computer-product retailer. NewEgg.com sells nine brands of laser printers. At the time of our visit, 22 printers have more than 10 reviews. With 214 reviews, the Brother HL-2170W is easily the most popular monochrome laser printer -- 74 percent of customers give it the top rating. Samsung and HP printers also do well.

Monochrome Laser Printers
by Contributors to Amazon.com
Our Assessment Amazon.com sells a typical selection of consumer laser printers. Users are invited to provide opinions of products they've purchased. Few models have a lot of reviews, but some Brother models have more than 100 ratings. Amazon is useful for two purposes: identifying models with particularly high or low average ratings and finding common complaints.

Dell Goes Cheap and Big with New Lasers
by Richard Baguley
Our Assessment Three new Dell printer models are discussed here, although the cursory descriptions are little more than a listing of specifications. Although the Dells are compared among themselves, there is no mention of how each model fares in contrast to other brands.
