The Brother HL-2270DW has withstood the test of time to become one of the best personal laser printers you can buy. Experts (and thousands of owners) give it a nearly unqualified thumbs-up. It's really nothing fancy -- just a black-and-white laser printer with Wi-Fi, Ethernet and a duplexer -- but its secret is that it works reliably, year after year, and cheaply.
Fast, crisp, smooth-printing text. Breakneck speed for the price (27 text pages per minute) and impeccably clear text make the Brother HL-2270DW the small laser printer to beat. Graphics look mediocre (as usual for a laser printer), but they're perfectly fine for internal business use, and maybe even PowerPoint handouts for clients -- if you're not a perfectionist, PCMag.com says. The 250-sheet paper tray, single-sheet manual feed and automatic duplexer all work flawlessly in tests, cranking out pages without a hiccup. A few owners report trouble with the duplexer, and a few others have trouble with wireless setup, but for the overwhelming majority, it's smooth sailing.
Small printer networks with ease. The Brother HL-2270DW hits all the right notes, reviews say: It's small (smaller than most inkjet printers, so it'll share your desk nicely), has Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity (for easy wired or wireless printer-sharing), and it can print wirelessly from smartphones and tablets too. Besides the automatic duplexer, that's about it for features -- but that's all many users really want or need. In short, the Brother HL-2270DW is "a power user's personal printer," PCMag.com says, ideal for home use, micro offices or small work groups.
Super-reliable. The Brother HL-2270DW feels kind of lightweight and plastic, ComputerShopper.com points out -- but other experts find no problems with the build quality, and neither do legions of satisfied owners. In fact, Brother's reliability and customer satisfaction are so stellar, it usually beats other printer brands in annual reader surveys conducted by PCMag.com and the U.K.'s Which? magazine.
Brother says the HL-2270DW can churn out up to 10,000 pages in a month (although Brother recommends regularly keeping that to a more modest 2,000 pages per month). The printer carries a one-year warranty. A few owners complain that the laser printer considers cartridges to be empty even though there is still plenty of toner left, but other owners say a simple reset corrects the problem -- and in expert tests, this proves to be one of the cheapest printers to run (1.9 cents per text page, in one leading test).
Small and speedy, the Brother HL-2270DW earns PCMag.com's Editors' Choice award. Tester M. David Stone gives it 4 out of 5 stars; he says it prints well and has the right features for personal use or as a shared printer in a small office.
