Great Value Ultra (Wal-Mart)

*Est. 12 cents per load

Pros
  • Cleans almost as well as more expensive detergents
Cons
  • The fragrance may be unpleasant to some
  • Only found at Wal-Mart

Although we didn't see it included in as many tests as Tide with Bleach Alternative (*est. 35 cents per load), Wal-Mart's house brand, Great Value Ultra, cleans only slightly less impressively than Tide and costs almost two-thirds less. As with all laundry detergents, the fragrance may not be to your liking, but Great Value Ultra detergent cleans as well or better in tests than most other laundry soap. Great Value Ultra is not formulated for use in high-efficiency washers, which require a low-suds formulation.

Great Value Ultra laundry detergent is included in testing at Consumer Reports, where it is compared with others on its ability to clean clothes and retain the appearance of fabric.

In this review, Consumer Reports tests 39 laundry detergents against nine common staining agents, including grass, chocolate ice cream, red lipstick and blood. Products are tested in three categories: cleaning, keeping dirt off and keeping dye off. Consumer Reports performed more recent testing in May 2008. A different Wal-Mart laundry detergent, Great Value Everyday Elegance 2X Ultra, is one of the brands tested.
