February 2009. Tide detergent in general is well-reviewed by consumers, and in more formal testing it excels at stain removal and keeping colors bright. Tide 2X Ultra Concentrated with a Touch of Downy is a top performer in comparison testing, but as with all Tide formulas, it's more expensive than many other brands. Wal-Mart's house brand, Great Value Everyday Elegance 2X Ultra (*est. 19 cents per load), cleans only slightly less impressively than Tide laundry detergent in testing and it costs less than half per load. Tide with a Touch of Downy does contain fragrance and dyes. Those with chemical sensitivities or allergies can consider trying Country Save HE Laundry Detergent Powder (*est. 9 cents per HE load) or Seventh Generation Free & Clear (*est. 26 cents per load), both of which are free of dyes and fragrances.
When it comes to laundry detergent for standard top-loading washing machines, Tide liquid laundry soaps are the detergents most often included in tests and reviews. In mid-2008, Tide revamped its detergents into double-strength "2X Ultra" formulations. We didn't find many reviews of the new formulations, but they have received top marks in comparison testing.

Consumer Reports tests 34 high-efficiency and conventional laundry detergents against nine stains, including grass, chocolate, red wine and blood. Detergents are evaluated on their ability to not only remove stains but to preserve fabric color. The list also indicates whether the detergents contain NPEs (nonylphenol ethoxylates), which are toxic to aquatic plants and animals. A ratings chart is included.
