The Black & Decker CM1936 is a convenient, environmentally friendly alternative to gas mowers. Reviewers say it excels at mulching jobs but only offers average performance when it comes to bagging clippings. It has enough battery life to handle yards up to one-third acre in size. Owners especially appreciate the convenience of a removable battery, folding handle and a single-lever height adjustment feature. The CM1936 is covered by a two-year warranty.
Excellent mulcher. The Black & Decker CM1936 gets rave reviews for its excellent performance, especially on mulching jobs. In one professional test, the mower produced fine clippings and left minimal clumps while mulching. Side-discharge and bagging functions were not as impressive but still performed well. Users say the CM1936 can handle most average jobs as well as any gas-powered mower, but thick and/or wet grass really give it a run for its money. Furthermore, users say the 36-volt battery provides enough power to mow an entire lawn -- up to one-third acre -- in a single charge
We found a few complaints about poor customer service and warranty issues. The company ranks below industry averages in J.D. Power's recent surveys.
Heavy but convenient. In addition to the standard conveniences -- like low maintenance and an instant-start feature -- the Black & Decker CM1936's removable battery is a reviewer favorite. It allows users to swap out a second battery so there is always enough power for any job. One reviewer at Amazon.com says, "I'm more likely to run out of juice before the mower does."
Reviewers also praise the single-lever height adjustment feature. A simple touch of the lever simultaneously adjusts all four wheels from 1.5 inches to 3.5 inches. The mower also collapses for easy storage and has a lifetime, no-rust 19-inch deck.
No accidental starting. The Black & Decker CM1936 has built-in safety features that prevent accidental starting. To start the mower, users must insert a safety key and pull a bail handle. Furthermore, the blades immediately stop spinning when the bail lever is released and won't start again until the safety key is once again engaged.
Users are impressed with Black & Decker's quiet motor -- especially when compared to a gas mower. One owner at HomeDepot.com says, "… you can easily carry on a conversation while the mower is running."
The Black & Decker CM1936 is included in ConsumerReports.org's latest comparison test of 55 models of self-propelled lawn mowers. Editors evaluate each mower's ability to cut, mulch, bag and side-discharge, as well as overall handling and usability.

2. J.D. Power & Associates
In its fourth year of analyzing customer satisfaction for walk-behind mowers, J.D. Power and Associates lists only six brands. The smaller listing of brands may also correlate with the smaller number of surveys received, less than half from the year before. Black & Decker again ranks below the industry average and is at the bottom of the chart.
