Great electric mower, November 14, 2009
The Black & Decker MM875 is a solid machine. Cuts grass cleanly and evenly. Mulches so well that no bagging is necessary. The 19 inch cut is plenty for even large lawns. If you're looking for an electric, buy this one; can't do better.

A great machine, November 8, 2009

I bought one of these two years ago, at a considerably higher price by the way, and I love it. Here's why: * After 40 years of fighting with pull-start gasoline mowers, trying to get them to fire up, this one starts instantly -- ALWAYS! That alone may be worth the $400-plus price I paid. * I no longer have to go to the gas station to get fuel, and have that hazardous waste hanging around. No more oil to dispose of, too. (Not that I bothered to change it much; what a bother!) * When I finish mowing the lawn, I don't smell like an exhaust pipe. * There is virtually no maintenance -- no worrying about water in the gas tank, gas line clogs, changing oil, cleaning filters, getting the spark gap right, cleaning out gas/oil for winter, etc. Plug it in, charge it up, and mow! * It's a green machine, more environmentally friendly than the gas-and-oil spewing contraptions I've used for years. * It makes a lot less noise than a gasoline-engine mower (though I would not fire it up at 7 on a Sunday morning). * It does a surprisingly good job of mulching leaves in the fall. I wish the cut were more than 19 inches, but that's not a big deal for me. I have about a third of an acre to mow, and it handles that nicely on one charge. Thanks to the batteries, the unit is heavier than a comparable four-stroke gas mower, but even at age 65, I like the exercise and don't mind the bit of extra effort. Hell, it's good for you! I do not use the grass-leaf catcher that comes with the mower. I believe in leaving the grass cuttings and chopped leaves in the lawn as nutrient-sources for the grass. I keep the mower elevation setting relatively high off the ground -- it's better for the grass. I am glad to see the prices of these coming down. At under $200, this is a real bargain.

Better than uncorded, September 22, 2009
This is a good mower and easy to set up. I have tried Black and Decker uncorded electric mowers and found that they lost power too soon for even my ordinary size yard. Glad I have the corded one now.
Plastic housing for a lawnmower?, September 19, 2009

This is a beautiful mower with a serious Achilles' heel: the housing around the cutting blade is made of plastic! Sure, it doesn't rust, but I hit an unseen piece of a concrete block and it ripped a 2" hole in the housing on my 3rd use of this mower. My last B&D electric mower lasted 30 years until the housing rusted away. How long do you think this mower's housing will last? Unless you're 100% confident you'll never run over anything except grass, I'd recommend staying away from this mower.

2. ConsumerGuide.com

This single-product review of the Black & Decker MM875 has more detail than Consumer Reports but much more informal testing. It gets perfect ratings for features, performance and value, but slightly lower ratings for ease of use.

3. Which.co.uk

A similar Black & Decker electric mower is reviewed at this U.K. review site, where mowers are rated for speed, quality of cut and ability to bag clippings. Even manual reel mowers are tested on tall grass and damp grass, but not on rough. The Black & Decker electric mower loses points here for an uncomfortable one-sided control.

4. Amazon.com

Nearly 300 owners review the corded electric Black & Decker MM875 lawn mower here, giving it above-average ratings. A few complain of quality-control problems and breakdowns. They also cite problems keeping the cord out of the way. Two lower-powered Black & Decker electric mowers actually get higher average ratings here, but from fewer users.
