The 20-inch Scotts Green Classic 2000-20 is one of the widest manual reel mowers available, and one of the easiest to find. Reviewers recommend the Scotts Green Classic 2000-20 for upright grasses such as fescue. For low, tough grasses like Bermuda, zoysia or St. Augustine, a seven-bladed reel mower cuts better. Because the 20-inch model weighs 30 pounds, some owners prefer a lighter 18- or even 16-inch reel mower, which also costs less. The warranty is for three years. One drawback is that like most reel mowers, this one mows only between the wheels, so they can't mow very close to a curb or wall. If you can afford it, reviewers recommend stepping up to the newer Fiskars Momentum 6201 (*Est. $200), which positions the wheels better, has a higher maximum cutting height and is easier to push.

We found the most objective tests of the Scotts Green Classic mower at ConsumerReports.org, where comparisons with two other manual reel mowers are reported in the Home and Gardening blog. Over 600 owners review the Scotts Classic Green 2000-20 mower at Amazon.com, and we also found useful ratings and comments from owners published at HomeDepot.com and CleanAirGardening.com. The recommendations at Consumers Digest emphasize features rather than testing. We also found useful information in Eric Burke's blog review at StuffThatHappens.com, a review at Treehugger.com plus an article from the (Minneapolis) Star Tribune.

Our Sources

1. ConsumerReports.org

ConsumerReports.org is not enthusiastic about manual reel mowers for most users. Compared with an Easun NaturCut and Fiskars Momentum reel mowers, the Scott 2000-20 is the hardest to push. Also, the blades on the Scott mower need annual sharpening and the mower leaves uncut grass where the tires pass.

5. Consumers Digest

The Scotts Classic 2000-20 earns high praise here for its wide cutting path and rear tracking tires. No testing is documented, and there's no mention of the newer competitor, the Fiskars Momentum.

6. StuffThatHappens.com

Very disappointed with the effort required, blogger Eric Burke quotes and contradicts some of the reviews of the Scotts Green Classic mower posted at Amazon.com. Quite a few readers weigh in on both sides: Some defend manual reel mowers, while others say they prefer electric models.

7. TreeHugger.com

This Canadian reviewer says he's surprised that mowing with a reel mower is not only pleasant, but can also be as fast as mowing with a push gas mower because the reel mower is lighter. More than two dozen readers add useful comments; one notes that a drawback is the inability of a reel mower to mow close to a wall or curb, so more trimming is needed.
