Gamers want fast response times from their monitors to avoid ghosting of on-screen motion during shooters, racing and other fast-action games. The 24-inch Gateway FHX2402L delivers on that score with a speedy 2 ms response time. Like most fast monitors, it relies on a TN (twisted nematic) panel to deliver speedy times, with the downside being poorer overall picture quality than monitors that use different LCD technologies. That said, picture quality is a cut above similar TN-based monitors, and reviewers say that images are sharp and detailed, with good color and brightness.
On the downside, you won't be able to make out much detail in darker areas of the screen, and like all monitors that use a TN LCD panel, viewing angles to see the best picture quality are limited. There's no DisplayPort connection, but all the other expected inputs (VGA, DVI and HDMI) are present. There's also no support for 3D movies or games. If you are interested in 3D, the 23-inch Asus VG236H 3D LCD monitor (*Est. $470) , which includes the NVIDIA 3D Vision Kit necessary to show three-dimensional games and movies on-screen, gets excellent reviews. However, you might be able to save a few dollars by opting for the monitor outside of the bundle, sold as the Asus VG236HE (*Est. $310) , and buying the NVIDIA Vision 3D Kit separately (*Est. $130). If you are not a gamer and would prefer better picture quality over fast response times, the 23-inch Asus ML239H (*Est. $150) is a good performer and a great value.

Maximum PC's Amber Bouman reviews the Gateway FHX2402L widescreen LCD monitor, giving it an excellent 9 out of 10 score for its extremely sharp and detailed images and good color reproduction. More adjustment (height, swivel) would have been welcome, and black-level detail isn't perfect, she writes. "Overall, it was easy to ignore the FHX2402L's few drawbacks, as it consistently produced such vivid and sharp images and detail."

The editors of TopTenReviews.com praise the Gateway FHX2402L's extremely fast response time, but warn that like all TN-based LCD monitors it has narrow viewing angles. The Gateway FHX2402L has a good picture but could use more adjustability, they note, giving it 3.5 out of 4 stars. However, hands-on testing, if any, is not documented.
