Large-screen monitors haven't won over everyone -- Consumer Reports, for instance, hasn't rated monitors larger than 24 inches. We found the best review at PC World, where a top-five list (the Samsung SyncMaster 275T is top rated) makes it easy to identify the best choices. PC World bases its ratings on extensive testing, an attribute shared by other top sources like ExtremeTech.com, the Australian version of CNet, TechGage.com and XbitLabs.com. Owner reviews at Newegg.com and Amazon.com aren't plentiful, but are mostly complimentary.

The Samsung SyncMaster 275T gets better evaluations than most 27-inch LCD computer widescreen monitors. The 275T is discontinued but still available online -- Samsung offers similar 24- and 30-inch monitors but no 27-inchers anymore. The SyncMaster 275T is an S-PVA monitor with the standard resolution (1,920 pixels by 1,200 pixels). Reviews say text display isn't great, but the Samsung SyncMaster 275T is excellent for movies and gaming. Many LCD monitors draw criticism for having stands that aren't very adjustable, but reviews say the Samsung SyncMaster 275T's swivel base is good. A couple of reviews, while praising the 275T, recommended the less expensive Dell 2707WFP, which has since been replaced by the Dell 2709W (*est. $900).

Our Sources

1. PC World

This top five rates the Samsung SyncMaster 275T as the top 25.5- to 28-incher, and links to a full review based on extensive lab testing. The only major drawback is some "unnatural" color during video playback.

2. ExtremeTech.com

Reviews here are based on laboratory and hands-on testing; the shortcoming is a lack of comparisons with competing products. This review says the Samsung SynchMaster 275T's only negative is video reproduction.

3. CNET (Australia)

The Australian version of CNet.com runs its own reviews in addition to those by the U.S. website. This one says the 275T is "excellent" but ultimately says you're better off with the Dell 2707WFP because of its 1:1 mode and the nine-in-one card reader.

Review: Samsung SyncMaster 275T Review, Craig Simms, Aug. 15, 2007

4. Techgage.com

Reviewer Rob Williams admits he's tried only one other 27-incher and says the Dell 2707WFP would be his choice because of better height adjustability, although the Samsung 275T has the brighter screen.

Review: Samsung 275T 27-inch Wide-Screen, Rob Williams, June 20, 2007

5. XBitLabs.com

Xbit Labs is very thorough and very technical, usually ranking higher in our sources ratings. Oddly, there are three screens reviewed in this roundup, but only two are directly compared and the 275T isn't one of them. The portion on the 275T doesn't really note any drawbacks.

6. NewEgg.com

About two dozen owner reviews are posted here, almost all rating the Samsung SynchMaster 275T as a four or the maximum five. The chief drawback is price. Some say the monitor tilts a bit from right to left and that it runs a bit hot.

7. Amazon.com

There are just a few owner reviews of the Samsung 275T, each giving it the maximum score of five. Two of the reviews are by gamers, and the other watches a lot of TV on the screen.
