If your needs are basic, reviews say the ViewSonic VX1940w is the best 19-inch widescreen LCD computer monitor for your money. Its very high resolution of 1,680 pixels by 1,050 pixels is generally found on 20- to 22-inch monitors, giving it exceptionally crisp image quality for its size and price. Some reviews say dark scenes are a bit hard to see when gaming or watching video, and small type could be a bit sharper. Graphics professionals probably will want something with better color refinements, but reviews say this monitor is a good value for general home and office use. If you want something a bit larger, the Samsung SyncMaster 2053BW (Discontinued) gets the best reviews among 20-inch LCD monitors.
We found the best review of the ViewSonic VX1940w at Bit-Tech.net. This British website is aimed at gamers, so text performance is ignored, but its testing is more thorough than that of other review sources. TrustedReviews.com doesn't often rank very high in our electronics reports, but its coverage of the ViewSonic VX1940w is thorough and analytical. Reviews are shorter at PC Pro magazine, Custom PC magazine and TechTree.com, but reviewers base their assessments on solid hands-on testing.

1. Bit-tech.net
The United Kingdom's Bit-Tech.net is oriented toward gamers, and text quality is ignored in its tests of LCD monitors. In his review of the ViewSonic VX1940w, Jeremy Laird says, "LAN gamers will appreciate the combination of high detail, speedy pixel response and compact, travel-friendly dimensions."

TrustedReviews.com is not the most critical of review sources in its assessments, providing numerical scores and little analysis beyond describing features. Andy Vandervell does more than that here, saying the ViewSonic VX1940w is fine for text, but disappointing on dark scenes for video and gaming.

Consumer Reports is one of the few general interest publications that still tests smaller LCD monitors. Eleven 19-inchers are ranked for image quality and ease of use, including the ViewSonic VX1940w. The article is free, but test results are available to subscribers only.

4. PC Pro
Britain's PC Pro magazine publishes very short reviews, but does its due diligence with hands-on use. The ViewSonic VX1940w makes the magazine's A List, but Bayon says the price is a bit too steep.

5. Custom PC
U.K. computer magazine Custom PC reviews a handful of monitors, putting them through their paces. The ViewSonic VX1940w gets a score of 73 percent. Reviewer James Morris says he prefers the Samsung SyncMaster 206BW because it offers more vibrant colors for nearly the same price.

6. Techtree.com
Reviewer Sudeep Naik gives the ViewSonic VX1940w 4.5 out of five stars and says the high resolution is worth the price, in part because of the excellent picture quality. It should be noted that the prices are not in U.S. dollars, as this is an Indian website.

About a dozen owners give the ViewSonic VX1940 a high average score. Only a few users give the monitor low marks, primarily because they received defective products.
