Black levels that are lighter than the very best performers leave some reviewers lukewarm, but others heap nothing but praise on the distinctively styled LG 47LG60 HDTV. Nicknamed Scarlet by the maker, the bright red cabinet and piano-black bezel make a statement even when this 47-inch TV is turned off. In terms of picture, colors are accurate and the grayscale is nearly perfect, either out of the box or after some tweaking. Speaking of tweaking, tons of video controls will keep fiddlers obsessed for hours. Outstanding signal processing for HD and SD material is another strong plus. Among other LCD TVs in the same class, the Samsung LN46A650 (*Est. $1,515) has better black levels, but a more reflective screen could be a problem in well-lit rooms. The Sony KDL-46XBR6 (*Est. $2,120) delivers strong picture quality with great black levels and a more matte screen, but some question whether the performance is worth its price premium.

Though user reviews remain scarce, lots of experts have weighed in on the 47-inch LG 47LG60. CNET is one of the most prolific reviewers of LCD TVs, and one of the more critical when it comes to this TV. Sound & Vision and PCMag.com, on the other hand, bestow Scarlet with praise and awards. The most in-depth review can be found at Ultimate AV, though non-technophiles might find themselves overwhelmed with information.

Our Sources

1. CNET

CNET says that there's plenty to like in the 47-inch LG 47LG60, including colors that can be dialed in to near perfection, above average SD video processing, and the ability to withstand a brightly lit room. However, in the end, David Katzmaier can't quite forgive blacks that are a bit lighter than the very best in this category, and cites a few other lesser negatives as well.

2. Sound & Vision Magazine

Where CNET's reaction to the LG 47LG60 is mixed, Sound & Vision is wowed by this LCD TV. The site grants the TV its Certified and Recommended award and a spot on its list of the very best home theater equipment. Rob Sabin concedes that other LCD TVs outperform this LG model in black levels, but adds, "I found the picture punchy, dynamic, and engaging."

3. PCMag.com

Robert Heron of PCMag.com is also impressed with the LG 47LG60, giving it an Editors' Choice award. He praises the set's modern styling, HD video processor, and its ability to reduce motion blur. Like every other reviewer, he notes that blacks could be better, but that doesn't stop him from saying that this TV has the best picture quality and picture controls of any LCD TV he's seen.

4. Ultimate AV Magazine

While all of the reviews above are meaty and informative, none go into the level of detail presented here. Real-world and bench-testing are described thoroughly -- perhaps too much so for those who aren't technologically obsessed. Scott Wilkinson compares this LCD TV with two others and finds pluses and minuses with all of them. He adds that the 47LG60 is "worthy of serious consideration."
