The 55-inch LG 55LW5600 is winning fans for its combination of good picture quality and cutting- edge features. The TV has better screen uniformity than many other edge-lit LED sets, such as the otherwise highly regarded Samsung UN55D8000 (*Est. $2,600) , but black levels, while dark, don't quite stand up to the very best sets, including that one. Color performance, on the other hand, is very strong and LG offers an extensive suite of image adjustments that make it easy for users to get things just right.
In terms of features, there's little that's not included. The 3D feature uses passive technology rather than active-shutter glasses. The advantages are that the glasses are cheap and light (LG includes four pairs in the box, and extras cost around $25 for two pairs) and that screen brightness is better. The big disadvantage is that resolution is cut in half (something that doesn't happen with active shutter). Whether that minus outweighs the pluses is the subject of debate, though many contend that for most families (rather than purists) the compromises are acceptable.
Internet connectivity features are undoubtedly a high point, and LG includes apps for most major content providers. There's also a built-in web browser, and the set includes a second, Wii-like remote that lets you control an on-screen cursor just by moving your hand. A mobile-phone like app store is also part of the offerings, though content there is still limited -- mostly games, according to reports. The LG 55LW5600 is DLNA compliant, so you can stream content from a networked personal computer. While Wi-Fi is not built in, an accessory Wi-Fi adapter is included in the box for those who want to connect wirelessly.
The two screen sizes in LG's LW5600 series -- the TV is also available in a 47-inch screen size as the LG 47LW5600 (*Est. $1,200) -- have started to gather a bit of feedback. While most reviewers have looked at the 47-inch version of the TV, experts say that aside from screen sizes, the TVs should provide similar performance. Those craving lots of technical details will want to read the reports at Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity, TelevisionInfo.com and HDGuru.com. There's also a report from the point of view of a professional calibrator at AVSForum.com. PCMag.com, PC World and The Perfect Vision also have helpful reports. 2. HDGuru.com
HDGuru.com looks at the 55-inch LG 55LW5600 and comes away mostly impressed. The site notes that on several fronts, the passive 3D offered falls short of active-shutter sets, but that the experience should still be good enough -- especially when viewing 1080p content -- to please most owners. On the 2D front there's no equivocation: "This HDTV makes some of the best 2D LED LCD images we've seen," site owner Gary Merson writes.

David Birch-Jones says that while purists might debate the merits of passive 3D, for most viewers the value and overall effect delivered by the LG LW5600 is good enough to render the argument moot. For 2D viewing, picture quality is also good, though Birch-Jones complains about some uniformity issues, especially when the image is viewed from above or below straight on.

Top-quality 2D and 3D images coupled with lots of features and a great price combine to earn the LG 47LW5600 an Editors' Choice here. John R. Delaney finds a few minor issues but is for the most part impressed.

5. CNET
CNET bases its evaluation of the LG 55LW5600 on its hands-on test of the 47-inch set in this series. Though David Katzmaier is not a fan of passive 3D, he finds lots to like with the 2D picture performance. It's an especially good choice for well-lit rooms, he opines.

6. Secrets of Home Theater and High FidelityDetails/Subscribe
This site for those obsessed with home theater gives its typically thorough review treatment to the LG 55LW5600. Some issues are raised with the nature of the passive 3D display -- including the screen treatment that's part of the technology. Because of that, the reviewers suggest seeing the set in person before buying to see if it is bothersome. For those that are fine with it, the 55LW5600 is called a "very nice display."

PC World says that the LG 47LW5600 "more than holds its own" when compared with other 3D sets. Internet connectivity and the motion-controlled remote come in for praise as well.

ISF-certified calibrator "ChadB" gives his take on the 55-inch LG 55LW5600 here. He says that those who like to watch TVs in dark rooms or obsess about details might like another set better. But for everyone else, and especially those who like to watch TV with the lights on, it's hard to beat.
