If you want a very big screen TV at a relatively affordable price, the 70-inch Sharp LC-70LE732U deserves a serious look. Given the price and the size, it's not surprising that picture quality can't quite stand up to the very best -- such as the Sony XBR-HX929 series -- but to get close to the same screen size you need to be prepared to spend around $6,000 for the 65-inch XBR-65HX929, or settle for the relatively diminutive 55-inch Sony XBR-55HX929 (*Est. $2,900) .

That's not to say that the Sharp TV's picture quality is bad. In fact, Andrew Robinson at HomeTheaterReview.com calls it "rather remarkable." CNET's David Katzmaier doesn't go nearly that far, but still says that picture quality is solid. Comparing it to some of the 65-inch plasma TVs available, CNET quickly says that the Sharp falls short in terms of things like black levels and off-angle viewing. However, for those that watch TV in a well-lit room, such as a living room or family room, the LC-70LE732U might be a better choice with its better brightness and a matte screen that does a good job with room reflections. Uniformity isn't as good as with a plasma set, but the full-matrix LED backlight helps the TV do better than most sets that use edge-lit backlights.

Color performance is generally good -- though whether that's despite of or because of the set's Quattron technology (which adds a yellow color subpixel to the traditional red, green and blue ones) is another question. CNET calls the color accuracy good but adds "there was little detriment (or advantage) we could spot related to the extra yellow pixel." Robinson eschews the test bench for viewing tests and raves about color performance with different test discs.

The LC-70LE732U lags in cutting-edge features. You won't find 3D, and while Internet streaming is offered, its implementation is unimpressive compared to competing sets. Reviewers complain that the lineup is missing some significant content providers and that the interface, as CNET puts it, "needs work.

The Sharp LC-70LE732U hasn't received a ton of reviews, but the reports at CNET and HomeTheaterReview.com are complete and balanced. User input can be found at BestBuy.com. The discussion at AVSForum.com includes a review from an ISF-certified calibrator.

Our Sources

1. CNET

CNET grants the 70 inch Sharp LC-70LE732U a spot on its list of top LCD TVs. David Katzmaier dislikes the streaming content interface and takes a few subtle pokes at Sharp's Quattron technology, but he says the picture quality is good, as is the deal for those that want a colossal big screen but not the hassle of a projector.

2. HomeTheaterReview.com

HomeTheaterReview.com doesn't do any heavy-duty bench testing, but it does put the 70-inch Sharp LC-70LE732U through its paces with a wide variety of source material. Like CNET, Internet connectivity leaves a frown rather than a smile, and build quality comes in for a few not-so-favorable comments. However, picture quality is judged to be excellent overall, and the value is also pretty good.

3. BestBuy.com

More than 50 owners post comments regarding the 70-inch LC-70LE732U. Not everyone is a fan, but the vast majority give it a perfect score of 5 stars. Among the few users who downrate the TV, some are not that impressed with its picture quality, while others are disappointed in the lack of 3D.

4. AVSForum.com

This long thread at AVSForum.com includes lots of discussion of the pros and cons of the 70-inch Sharp LC-70LE732U. It also includes a fairly detailed report from ISF-certified calibrator "ChadB," who appears to be fairly impressed. Some defects are noted, but ChadB says that the TV produces "a far better image than even the best 73-inch DLPs [rear projection TVs]."
