Bottom Line

The Insignia A19 800-Lumen Dimmable LED earns higher praise than any other LED bulb for the evenness of its light distribution. It also has a convenient traditional shape, and its estimated 22-year lifespan is backed up with a 10-year warranty. However, it's not as efficient as the Best Reviewed Cree 60-watt Replacement LED Soft White (Est. $13) , and it's pricier. Similar to the Cree bulb, it may not work well with a dimmer.

Performance

Superior light distribution. One common problem with LED bulbs is that they tend to focus their light in one direction only. The Insignia bulb avoids this problem, earning praise from both professional testers and home users for its even lighting. Its color temperature is a medium-cool "bright white," or 3,000K. It has the same familiar, compact shape as incandescent bulbs, and unlike the Cree, will work in an enclosed fixture. It's also lightweight, which is a plus for some lamps. However, it shares the Cree's tendency to buzz when used with a dimmer switch and it's not compatible with all dimmers.

ProsExcellent light distribution, Convenient shape, Works in enclosed fixtures, 10-year warrantyConsLess efficient than other LED bulbs, May not work well with dimmers

Value

Good, but not the best. At about $18, the Insignia bulb is fairly inexpensive for an LED bulb. It also has the same 25,000-hour rating and 10-year warranty as the Cree bulb. Yet it can't match the Cree's estimated $13 price tag or its efficiency. Although the Insignia bulb is Energy Star-rated, it uses 13 watts of power to produce 800 lumens of light, while the Cree uses only 9.5 watts. Reviewers at BestBuy.com have no complaints about the Insignia bulb's durability, but a couple of them complain that the bulb gets quite hot to the touch.
