Aquaphor Healing Ointment

Best lip treatment in a squeeze tube

Pros
  • Viscous formula
  • Multipurpose moisturizer
  • Fast results
Cons
  • Messier to apply than stick balms

Reviewers say that Aquaphor Healing Ointment is nothing short of a cure-all. While some say they use it for extremely dry skin caused by eczema or radiation therapy, most use the ointment for everyday use -- including as a lip balm. Experts say Aquaphor is an excellent option for lips because its viscous formula can permeate cracked, flaky skin. Beauty expert Paula Begoun gives it her highest rating because it's gentle enough for sensitive skin yet it "does a formidable job of protecting skin that is dry, cracked or irritated." Users at MakeupAlley.com, TotalBeauty.com and Drugstore.com agree, saying it works quickly to heal chapped lips. Aquaphor is a petrolatum-based product, much like Vaseline, which protects skin from moisture loss. Unlike Vaseline, though, it also includes moisturizing ingredients lanolin, panthenol and glycerin that hydrate parched lips. Some users say it can be a bit messy and recommend using it only at night. If you prefer a stick formula, Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm (*Est. $3) is highly rated.

Begoun rates thousands of beauty products based onscientific research of their ingredients. Hundreds of reviewers at MakeupAlley.com, TotalBeauty.com and Drugstore.com rate and review the ointment.
