If you're looking for a basic, versatile carry-on bag without wheels, reviewers say it's hard to find a better value than the eBags Weekender eTech Convertible. This 3.6-pound nylon bag has top and side handles and, for heavier loads, it converts to a backpack with adjustable, tuck-away straps. It also includes plenty of pockets for organization, as well as internal tie-downs and exterior cinch straps to keep the contents as compact as possible. Reviewers say this inexpensive bag is much stronger than others in its price range, with sturdy fabric, zippers and stitching. One downside: This bag does not come with a shoulder strap. Unlike the sturdier Red Oxx Air Boss (*Est. $225), the eBags Weekender eTech Convertible comes with only a limited lifetime warranty that doesn't cover accidental damage. If you are looking for an inexpensive bag with wheels, consider the L.L.Bean Rolling Adventure Duffle, size medium (*Est. $90).
The eBags Weekender eTech Convertible is featured in one comparison test, a 2008 evaluation of carry-on bags in the San Francisco Chronicle. However, the luggage in this review is not subjected to testing. Thousands of user reviews are available at the manufacturer's website, and about 30 more can be found at Amazon.com.
