Here's what the experts say to look for when purchasing luggage:

  • Look for a long warranty. Experts say this is the simplest way to estimate luggage quality, especially if the warranty covers accidental damage.
  • Cordura or ballistic nylon are more durable than polyester. This is especially important for frequent travelers or big bags that will always be checked rather than carried on. Cordura has more abrasion resistance; ballistic nylon, more resistance to tears. Leather tends to mold in humid climates.
  • Don't evaluate fabric just by denier. Denier is a unit of measurement for yard or thread; the lower the number, the finer the thread. Cordura nylon and slicker ballistic nylon are considered durable, but at OneBag.com, Doug Dyment notes that some imported 1,680 denier ballistic cloth is heavier but actually less durable than better-made 1,050 denier ballistic nylon.
  • Consider water resistance. Fabric coated or lined with polyurethane can protect contents, and zippers should be covered with water-resistant flaps. Only a few bags pass soaking tests.
  • Chain zippers are better than coil zippers. Chain zippers are fused to the fabric, coil zippers sewn on. In either type, look for the YKK brand. Be sure the pulls are sturdy and can be replaced if necessary.
  • Helper handles make a bag easier to lift. Look for handles on the top and on the side for easier lifting. A helper handle on the bottom is especially handy.
  • For rolling luggage, look for skate wheels set widely apart. Tests show that wheels set too close together make luggage tippy and hard to maneuver in tight turns. Travel experts are divided about whether or not it's better for wheels to be recessed (which minimizes breakage and bag size) or fully outside the bag (which maximizes packing space).
  • Wheel and handle quality are crucial on rolling luggage. Most durability tests and owners' complaints are about wheels and handles breaking off, bending or sticking. Recessed inline skate wheels (with ball bearings) are the best type, and they should roll quietly. The best wheels attach with screws rather than rivets, so they can be replaced. Check handles for comfort, too. Experts recommend loading and test-driving new luggage on a clean floor so you don't dirty the wheels and can return the bag if it doesn't roll and maneuver well.
