Travelpro Platinum Magna Review
Bottom Line

The Travelpro Platinum Magna 21-Inch Expandable Spinner Suiter is a great choice for trips for up to five days without strain, say reviewers. That means straining your body pulling it, or straining the capacity of the suitcase. The bag is designed to track true when it's pulled or pushed, and to cut down on muscle fatigue. Owners say it's a roomy case -- although a few would like more small organizational options. It may not fit in the overhead bin when expanded or if the front pockets are overstuffed.

Features

Roomy for its size. Reviewers say the Samsonite Sphere Expandable 21 Inch Spinner is great for business or recreational travel, thanks to its variety of pockets and packing options. This includes a removable, tri-fold suiter which users say helps keep suits and dresses from wrinkling. The main compartment is roomy, with wide compression straps to hold everything in place. There are built in side pockets; one that's ideal for toiletries that might leak, the other a mesh organizer for things like cords. Users say it seems as if has a larger capacity than its measurements indicate, and many say it easily holds enough clothing for five days. It's also expandable by two inches in case you come home with more than you leave with. While it does not have dedicated laptop storage, users say a smaller laptop will fit in the larger front pocket, and the smaller front pocket will hold items you may need to get to quickly, such as boarding passes.

Convenience

Magnetic wheels roll smooth and true. The Travelpro Platinum Magna 21-Inch Expandable Spinner Suiter's big selling point is its proprietary magnetic wheel alignment technology that reduces one of the frustrations of spinner suitcases -- the drift and wobble that can make them hard to control. Experts and users say it really works and the case glides smoothly over any surface. The contour grip on the handle is also widely praised by reviewers who say it greatly improves the comfort of pulling the suitcase over long distances; owners say it's much easier to pull than other suitcases they've owned. At 7.9 pounds, it's relatively lightweight and has top and side helper handles to make it easier to lift. It's reported to fit in the overhead bins of most planes, but not smaller, regional jets. It also may not fit if you take advantage of its expansion capabilities or if the front pockets are overstuffed.

Appearance/durability

Three color options. While there are only two colors listed on Travelpro's website -- black and olive -- we also saw the Platinum Magna 21-Inch Expandable Spinner Suiter available in Siena (a burnt orange). Reviewers say the suitcase is attractive and the black is appropriately business-like. The spinner wheels are reported as sturdy and durable, as is the high density ballistic nylon material. It comes with a lifetime "Worry Free" warranty that owners say is quite inclusive compared to other luggage warranties. You can read the specifics on Travelpro's website. Best of all, the wheels on the Platinum Magna collection are easily replaceable.

The Travelpro Platinum Magna Spinner Suiter makes this list of the best carry-on luggage, as a bag that works out the bugs inherent in the four-wheel spinner design. There is no mention of any hands on testing, however; the Travelpro Magna collection seems to have been chosen for its new wheel design.

11 Days Living out of Travelpro's Platinum Magna Carry-On, Bruce Murray, Oct. 12, 2013

Travel writer and photographer Bruce Murray used the Platinum Magma 22-inch Suiter on an 11-day writing assignment and was ultimately very pleased with it. He likes its proprietary spinner wheel technology and light weight, but notes that any spinner bag causes you to lose interior space. Although this is definitely the spinner suiter he is testing, the link at the bottom of the article goes to the 22-inch, 2-wheeled Rollaboard Suiter. We believe this specific tested bag is a previous version of the Spinner Suiter, which is now made in a 21-inch size. However, the wheels and handles -- the focus of the review -- are the same.
