The GE Profile JVM1790WK, an over-the-range microwave, includes a convection oven, which allows users to bake or roast foods -- a feature not offered in a standard microwave. This 1.7-cubic-foot microwave also includes a cooking sensor, which helps prevent over- or undercooking. It performs well in two professional tests, and user reviews are mostly positive. This microwave earns praise for being stylish and easy to install and use, and most users like its energy-saving convection mode. However, a few owners are disappointed in the convection feature because it takes a very long time to preheat -- sometimes more than 30 minutes to get the oven up to 400 degrees. Users also dislike the "fiddly" dial control, which can only be set in 15-second increments. The Whirlpool GH7208XR (*Est. $875) is an over-the-range oven with convection that fares better in reviews, but it is quite a bit more expensive. For those who do not need the convection feature, the Samsung SMH9187 (*Est. $265) is a less expensive over-the-range model that gets fairly good ratings.

The GE Profile JVM1790 is included in the latest microwave test at ConsumerReports.org, and it's also a Best Buy at ConsumerGuide.com. We found many owner-written reviews at sites such as HomeDepot.com, Epinions.com and Sears.com. User reviews are especially helpful for determining long-term reliability.
