GE Profile PVM9179SFSS Over-the-Range Microwave Review
Bottom Line

Experts and owners say the 1.7 cubic foot GE Profile PVM9179SFSS fits well with almost any range, especially with its four color/finish options; this model is stainless steel, but slate, white and black are also available. Most say this GE microwave is very easy to install using the optional trim kit, which ranges from about $150 to $200 depending upon the trim size and type, and looks like a custom built-in when done. Some say there's a learning curve for mastering the convection feature.

Performance

Versatile and powerful. Plenty of owners say the convection feature on the GE Profile PVM9179SFSS has enabled them to eschew their ovens for smaller cooking jobs. It's also great for daily use as a microwave, or an additional oven for holidays, they add. However, as one expert points out, it won't work as well for convection cooking as a range or wall oven. It's reported as plenty powerful, and most say that it completely outshines previous microwaves they've owned that also were rated at 1,000 watts. Its capacity is 1.7 cubic feet, which means it won't fit super large, rectangular dishes, but there's plenty of room for most other cookware. The sensor is reported as very accurate in professional tests and by users.

Features

Good array of choices. The GE Profile PVM9179SFSS doesn't have as many of the standard presets that are common on other microwaves, but we didn't see too many complaints from owners about this lack. It does include one-touch buttons for popcorn, beverages and several convection settings; and the "microwave express" button is an instant on, 30-second cook. Defrost, beverage and reheat settings have various power levels/cooking lengths depending upon how many time the button is pressed. While most of the controls are the standard, electronic keyboard type, it also has a more traditional spin knob for the convection and baking/roasting features. Some don't like the knob, saying it seems a bit too retro on a modern appliance; many love it, saying it seems sturdier than keypad controls.

Ease of use

Multi-use learning curve. The GE Profile PVM9179SFSS is billed as "three ovens in one," because of its ability to work like a microwave, or bake or roast using the convection feature. Users say there's a bit of a learning curve to using this oven, because, instead of the standard, one-touch microwave controls, cooking is done using a combination of settings. However, they say it's not difficult to learn and it's worth it to take the time to do so. The instructions are reported to be very easy to understand. Some would prefer a more modern keypad to the dial feature. Others particularly like the dial, saying it's simpler to use.

Durability/appearance

Attractive, fits well in most spaces. Many of the owners of the GE Profile PVM9179SFSS bought this microwave either as a new built-in for over their range, or to replace an existing over-the-range microwave that died. Because of the five color options, reviewers say they were easily able to match their range, and that this unit is very easy to install. A few also point out that, if you purchase it at a home improvement store, it may include free installation. Some say that the PVM9179SFSS did not fit their older, existing GE trim kit and they had to buy a new one (which will run about $150 to $200, depending upon its size and style). We read very few complaints about durability; there were some, but not enough to consider that a reason to be cautious about purchasing this microwave.
