Panasonic NN-H965WF

Best Countertop Microwave

Pros
  • Heats and defrosts very evenly
  • Large capacity
  • Accurate cooking sensors
  • Lots of features
Cons
  • Some durability complaints

Bottom line

The Panasonic NN-H965WF is the only microwave we've seen that's both big enough and accurate enough to defrost an entire turkey evenly. It combines a generous capacity (2.2 cubic feet) with inverter technology, which reviewers say delivers exceptionally even heat. It also offers a wide array of cooking options -- too many for some users, who say they'd prefer fewer and simpler controls. Its biggest weakness, however, is durability; we saw several complaints about breakdowns.

Performance

Very even heat. In professional tests, the Panasonic NN-H965WF gets very good scores for quick, even heating and defrosting. Users particularly love its defrosting capabilities, saying it thaws meat evenly without cooking it. They also find the Panasonic's cooking sensors very accurate. One reviewer at Walmart.com says the microwave reheated a dinner plate with several different items to perfection: nothing too hot, nothing too cold. Professional testers note that this microwave oven is a bit loud compared to other microwaves its size, but most users don't have a problem with the noise level.

Features

Loaded with features. In addition to its inverter technology, the Panasonic NN-H965WF includes cooking sensors for nine different menu items, plus a sensor reheat mode. It also has a wide variety of special cooking cycles with detailed prompts, which can be set to run in English, Spanish or French. One of the features users love most about this microwave oven is its huge capacity; one owner at Walmart.com chose it specifically because it was the only microwave that could rotate a 9-by-13 casserole dish. One feature the Panasonic lacks is a trim kit, so it can't be installed as a built-in microwave.

Ease of use

Could be simpler. Reviews are divided on how easy the Panasonic NN-H965WF is to use. One Walmart.com reviewer really likes that all you need to do to run it is punch in the time and push start, since a surprising number of microwaves require some additional button to be pushed first. However, several users say the Panasonic has too many fancy features that are complicated to use. Owners particularly dislike the scrolling menus, which they find slow and tedious. Many reviewers also complain that the microwave's door latch is extremely stiff, making it hard to open and close.

Durability

A few weak spots. Although some owners say this microwave oven has given them years of good service, others complain that it broke down within a year or two. A common problem is that the door latch breaks and the door can no longer be closed. Other users report problems with the magnetron and the control panel. One of the biggest gripes is that to get repairs the owner must transport the microwave to the nearest support center, which might be over 100 miles away. Moreover, after the first year the warranty does not cover labor, which can cost more than replacing the microwave.
