• Assess your recording needs. Making high-quality recordings is the main reason MiniDisc players/recorders remain in demand. The latest model, the Sony MZ-RH1, can record through its mic input. Then you can transfer the recordings to and from a PC or Mac computer. Be aware that older models can't do all three functions. Some can record, but not transfer recordings to a computer. Others can transfer recordings to a computer, but not from a computer. If you consider an older model, be sure to know what you're getting.
  • If you don't need to make recordings of live events, an MP3 player is a better fit. Making recordings is really the major strength of the MiniDisc format. If you don't need to record and mainly want to transfer music to/from a player for listening, then an MP3 player is a better option.
