The 12-inch DeWalt DW716 miter saw earns high marks from both professional reviewers and homeowners, all of whom say it's well-built, accurate, smooth and very easy to use. It also stands out among 12-inch compound miter saws for its large capacity; it can even crosscut a nominal 2-by-10 in one pass. Vertical capacity is also very good: baseboard as high as 6.5 inches, crown molding even slightly taller. The DeWalt saw weighs 44 pounds, but reviews judge it easy to carry. Also well-reviewed is the less expensive but less convenient single-bevel DeWalt DW715 (*Est. $330).
We found the best comparison tests of the DeWalt DW716 at the Journal of Light Construction and Tools of the Trade -- publications aimed at professional builders. Woodworker's Journal and Wood Magazine test the single-bevel DeWalt DW715 instead of the dual-bevel DW716, but many of the conclusions still apply. The DeWalt DW716 earns top ratings in owner-written reviews at many sites, including Amazon.com, Lowes.com, HomeDepot.com, Northern Tool and Equipment, and Sears.com. A video review at YouTube.com is basically an ad, but it's useful for its close-up views and demonstration.

1. Journal of Light Construction
The DeWalt DW716 earns top ranking in comparison tests of eight 12-inch compound miter saws, earning praise for its smooth cutting, superior capacity, miter lock, convenient detent override and excellent table extensions. The reviewer also finds it easy to carry.
Review: Tool Test: 12-inch Chop Saws, Andy Beasley, November 2007
2. Tools of the Trade
The DeWalt DW716 ranks third here after tests comparing it with seven other 12-inch compound miter saws by using them on the job in finish carpentry. The DeWalt loses points for lack of a laser guide and digital display, but is judged "an all-around good saw."
Review: Tool Test: 12-Inch Miter Saws, Greg Londos, July 2008
3. Wood Magazine
The single-bevel DeWalt DW715 miter saw (otherwise similar to the DW716) shares top ranking with the Bosch 3912, based on thorough objective tests of seven 12-inch compound miter saws. Editors praise the DeWalt's accuracy, detent override, miter lock and superior vertical capacity. The drawback is that sawdust can build up on the bevel scale so it gets hard to read.

4. Woodworker's Journal
Tests here cover the single-bevel DeWalt DW715 rather than the DW716. The reviewer praises the miter lock, trigger action and detent override, but finds the bevel scale a bit hard to read and criticizes the slot on the throatplate as too wide for making fine trim cuts.
