Bottom line

The Cuisinart HM-90S 9-Speed Handheld Mixer is a good option for those who don't have room to store a bulky stand mixer. It has a powerful 220-watt motor and comes with a storage case that holds the included attachments: beaters, whisk, dough hooks and a spatula. It has a three-year warranty.

Breaking it down

Powerful mixer; fast "slow" start. Experts and owners say Cuisinart HM-90S 9-Speed Handheld Mixer excels at beating cookie dough and kneading bread dough -- two of the most taxing jobs for any mixer, much less a hand mixer. A few say the dough hooks aren't very effective and that it takes just as long as kneading the dough by hand; although, to be fair, a hand mixer is not the best choice for mixing bread dough. If you are a frequent bread baker, you should consider a stand mixer instead. The Cuisinart HM-90S has a slow-start function to eliminate splattering on start-up, but owners say it leaves much to be desired. Quite a few say that it actually starts very quickly, then slows down, then speeds up again. However, this isn't a deal-breaker for most and they've found various ways around it. Like most mixers, the HM-90S gets mixed reviews for noise.

Ease of use

Lots of love for the storage case. The storage case is probably the most popular feature on the Cuisinart HM-90S 9-Speed Handheld Mixer. All of the attachments fit neatly inside and the hand mixer snaps into the top of the container, making the unit easy to move and store, reviewers say. Some owners are confused that the cord is not detachable since, in photos, the cord is not shown in the case. However, all you have to do is just fold the cord up, tuck it in, and snap the mixer in place. There can be a bit of a learning curve to attach the mixer to the storage container, but once you figure it out, it's simple to do. All of the HM-90S's attachments are dishwasher-safe. Reviewers also like the easy-to-use touch controls and digital display.

Hefty, but not too heavy. Owners say that in spite of its light weight (4 pounds) the Cuisinart HM-90S 9-Speed Handheld Mixer feels very solid, yet it's not tiring to use, even when mixing thicker ingredients. Many note it's attractive, sleek appearance and love its small footprint. We review the white model here, but it also comes in brushed chrome. The HM-90S gets very good reviews for durability as well. It comes with a three-year warranty, but Cuisinart is frequently panned for its poor customer service.
