Best basic stand mixer

  • Great mixing performance
  • Dishwasher safe accessories
  • Head locks in upright position
  • Quiet
  • Not best for kneading; heavy dough
  • May wobble/spatter on highest speeds

Bottom line

The Hamilton Beach Eclectrics 63221 is a solid, less-expensive option if you just need a basic stand mixer and want one that performs well in most mixing tasks. It has a 400-watt motor and a 4.5-quart mixing bowl and comes with three attachments -- a flat beater, whisk and dough hook. However, it's not the best choice if you bake a lot of bread. The bowl and attachments are all dishwasher safe. It has a long, three-year warranty.

Breaking it down

A solid, basic mixer. Although the Hamilton Beach Eclectrics 63221 stand mixer can't compete with top-ranked models from the likes of KitchenAid, owners and professional reviewers say it makes easy work of everything from cake batters to whipped cream and meringues. It's not the best choice for heavy, thick cookie dough or for kneading bread as it tends to strain and bog down with thicker ingredients. However, for basic mixing, experts say it offers a lot of bang for the buck. In one professional test it earns Excellent ratings for whipping time and mixing; and a rating of Very Good in kneading. It's also very quiet, both experts and users agree.

Ease of use

Mixed reviews. Some facets of the Hamilton Beach Eclectrics 63221 are very simple and intuitive, others not so much. Reviewers love the tilting head that locks in the upright position, and owners say the speed settings are easy to see and the handle on the mixing bowl is a nice touch. One professional test organization gives it a rating of Very Good for convenience However, several expert testers say the release button is awkwardly placed. We also saw complaints that cleanup is a chore because the mixer sometimes splatters on high speeds and there are too many crevices to clean.

Stylish but large. Like most full-size capacity stand mixers, owners say the Hamilton Beach Eclectrics 63221 will take up a good bit of real estate on your countertop, and, at 26.3 pounds, it's heavy to lift. However, it does come in four attractive colors -- red, black, sterling, and white -- which makes leaving it out on the counter a good option -- if you have the counter space for that. We saw very few complaints of durability, and owners say this stand mixer is very stable at all but the highest speeds. However, users and at least one expert reviewer do say it wobbled or "walked" at bit when pushed to its limits. The Eclectrics 63221 comes with a three-year warranty.
