Mixers: Ratings of Sources
In this thorough review, Lesley Stockton, an experienced cook and researcher, put in more than 30 hours of research and testing of six stand mixers and two hand mixers. She consults experts, looks at roundups and reviews, and tests the mixers herself as well. Ultimately, she chooses a best overall pick, a pick for larger batches and a pick for those who only bake occasionally or don't have room for a stand mixer.
The editors of ConsumerReports.org test 16 hand mixers and 25 stand mixers, rating them on whipping speed, mixing, convenience and noise. They are then ranked according to performance, and given a rating out of a possible 100. Recommended mixers and Best Buys are also noted.
Foodal, a food blog that features frequent product reviews, includes this extensive buying guide for stand mixers. Editors make picks for different levels of baking (light, medium and heavy duty) and base them on a range of criteria, including features, ease of use, value and build quality. The page also links to more in-depth reviews.
Cooks Illustrated editors test seven hand mixers in this thorough review and roundup. One is Highly Recommended, three are Recommended, one is Recommended with Reservations, and two are Not Recommended. In a separate, slightly older report, editors test nine stand mixers, with one Highly Recommended, two Recommended, two Recommended with Reservations, and four Not Recommended. Testing is hands-on and very thorough.
After testing a dozen mixers, the editors at Good Housekeeping list the pros and cons of all models. They name one model a top pick, one a best buy and a few others as recommended under certain circumstances. In a separate report, editors test 15 hand mixers and make similar recommendations.
There are thousands of mixers available through Amazon.com, including hand mixers, stand mixers and professional-grade mixers. KitchenAid stand mixers generally receive high ratings, with Cuisinart, Sunbeam and Hamilton Beach also rating well. Many reviews are very detailed, and some reviewers even go back after months or years to update the review on the product's long-term durability.
Walmart.com also carries a good selection of stand and hand mixers, and Hamilton Beach rules here, with many Hamilton Beach mixers getting hundreds of reviews, although KitchenAid and Sunbeam mixers also do well. In addition to the standard 5-star rating system, reviewers can say whether they would recommend the product to a friend.
Bed, Bath and Beyond carries high-end and mid-range mixer brands including KitchenAid, Cuisinart, Bosch and OXO. Reviewers rate products on a 5-star scale and say whether they would recommend the product, but reviews are typically much more brief than those found at Amazon.com.
