Benchtop Mixers: Review and Compare
by Editors of Choice magazine
Our Assessment

Australia's Choice magazine tests 12 stand mixers from KitchenAid, Breville, Kenwood, Sunbeam and Eurolab. The mixers are evaluated for ease of use, noise and performance, whisking egg whites, mixing cake batter and kneading pizza dough in less than five minutes with the dough hook. The Kenwood kMix Stand Mixer receives the best overall score, but it is one of several models not available in the United States. The KitchenAid Artisan Series Stand Mixer takes second place with perfect scores in all three performance categories.

High-End Stand Mixers
by Editors of Cook's Illustrated
Our Assessment

Cook's Illustrated compares 22 stand mixers based on overall design, features and bowl capacity. Testing involves tough tasks like kneading bread, pizza and cookie dough, as well as lighter chores like whipping egg whites and heavy cream. Testers did not find a correlation between higher wattage and better performance. Editors also recommend several other models and caution against buying a few others.

Inexpensive Stand Mixers
by Editors of Cook's Illustrated
Our Assessment

Cook's Illustrated asks the question, "Can you buy a solid mixer for under $200?" These less expensive mixers have a smaller-sized mixing bowl (under 5 quarts). Eight mixers are tested with mixing cookie dough, kneading pizza dough, creaming butter with sugar and whipping cream. The one unifying feature of the three top-rated mixers is their single beater arm and stationary bowl, rather than a rotating bowl with two stationary beaters.

The Best Hand Mixers
by Kristin Donnelly
Our Assessment

Food & Wine tests hand mixers among 76 small appliances in nine categories. We don't know how many hand mixers were included, but four models receive mention. The KitchenAid Professional 9-Speed Hand Mixer receives the top rating for mixing flour into dough with the ease and control of a stand mixer. Testers like the smooth control pad instead of raised buttons that can be difficult to clean between. Braun MultiMix 4-in-1 M880 (now discontinued) takes second place for its ergonomic design and three-speed simplicity. The Cuisinart Power Select 7-Speed Electronic Hand Mixer and the Dualit 5-Speed Chrome Hand Mixer also receive honorable mention for being powerful enough to handle mixing dough.

Best Hand Mixers
by Editors of Good Housekeeping
Our Assessment Good Housekeeping tests eight hand mixers, but only the top-rated mixers are mentioned. We're not told which models didn't make the cut. Included here are summaries of the three best mixers and three "smart sidekick" products that aren't mixers at all, such as a gourmet cake knife and cookie press. Methodology isn't shared, so we're not sure how these mixers were tested.

by Editors of Only-Cookware.com
Our Assessment

Only-Cookware.com includes write-ups of four stand mixers and four hand mixers. The mixers are evaluated according to what testers like and dislike, rather than according to a side-by-side comparison, and there are only a few comments that might lead you to think they'd been tested. Editors do state elsewhere that manufacturers send them products to review, and we could not find any poor reviews on the site, so this site's reviews may be lacking in balance.

Our Assessment Editors at Bon Appétit praise the KitchenAid Artisan Series Stand Mixer and two hand mixers: the KitchenAid Professional 9-Speed Hand Mixer and the KitchenAid 5-Speed Ultra Power Hand Mixer. Hand Mixers
by Editors of Which? magazine
Our Assessment This U.K. website selects two best buys among eight hand mixers, but most mixers aren't available in the United States. Mixers' ability to whisk eggs, make mayonnaise and mix cake batter are tested, but the products aren't put through more rigorous cookie- or bread-dough tests.
