Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion has long been a flagship item for Clinique, but the formula itself is basic. It lacks the good-for-skin-ingredients that are found in other top-rated moisturizers. While it does moisturize dry skin, it doesn't do much to repair the skin or prevent further damage. Olay Complete All Day Moisturizer SPF 15, Normal (*Est. $10 for 6 oz.) is a better overall option that also provides broad spectrum UV protection.
No bells and whistles. Experts say Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion is a bare-bones formula that lacks state-of-the-art ingredients that are commonly available in many facial moisturizers. Paula Begoun says it's "just a basic, mundane, out-of-date, yellow-toned moisturizer built around mineral oil and sesame oil." She says that there really isn't anything special about the formula -- other than its reasonable price tag. Still, the formula has made Allure magazine's list of Readers' Choice awards for four consecutive years. Editors say that the formula doesn't have any "bells and whistles" -- like antioxidants and sunscreen -- but "it plays nicely with others, so you can layer it under makeup and sunscreen with no fear of pilling."
The moisturizer earns a lackluster overall rating from thousands of reviewers at MakupAlley.com, but many of the disgruntled users have oily, acne-prone or combination skin. This formula, however, is designed for dry skin. Satisfied users acknowledge that the formula is basic, but many say that's what makes it ideal for dry, sensitive skin. They say it sinks in quickly, isn't heavy and locks in moisture. Furthermore, it can be used with additional sunscreen products and antioxidant serums.
Not too heavy. Readers at Allure magazine say Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion is lightweight and wears well under makeup. Users at MakeupAlley.com say the fragrance-free formula sinks into skin quickly, but some with oilier skin say it's a bit too greasy.
