Most professional reviewers like the iRiver Clix MP3 player, and the consensus seems to be that the sound quality and video display are great (though reviewers recommend upgrading the earphones). In contrast to the iPod nano (8 GB, *est. $200), the Clix features FM radio and a voice recorder. If you aren't already using iTunes and married to Apple's proprietary format, experts say the Clix is a great alternative with a beautiful, bright screen and intuitive user interface. One possible knock against the Clix is that there are quite a few complaints among Amazon.com users regarding iRiver's customer service.

We found several reviews of the iRiver Clix MP3 player and weeded out those that don't cover the improved second-generation unit. Consumer Reports magazine doesn't include the Clix in its ratings of 27 flash players. Also, keep in mind that everyone reviewed the iRiver Clix months before Apple updated the iPod nano and introduced the iPod touch (8GB, *est. $290). CNet.com is usually at or near the top of our review ratings for MP3 players and is a reliable source of reviews based on reviewer observations and laboratory testing. CNet gives the Clix and the iPod touch identical scores.

CNet.com gives the iRiver Clix 4 GB an Editors' Choice and a score of 8.7. Their readers, however, have to deal with iRiver's customer service and rate it a three out of five stars. Overall, CNet.com editors list the Clix as one of its five best digital music players overall.

2. PCMag.com

PC Magazine says if you aren't married to iTunes, the iRiver Clix "is an excellent choice." Clix gets a high rating, but is knocked for "terrible" earbuds, a confusing problem with volume control and the fact that you can't use it while charging or loading.

3. Anything But iPod

This website publishes long, detailed reviews but obviously suffers a bit from not having iPods as a frame of reference. Reviewer Grahm Skee writes, "The Clix2 screen is absolutely stunning; it literally looks as if they've taken a plasma TV and shrunken it."

4. Amazon.com

Each memory size (2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB) of the iRiver Clix has its own set of customer reviews. User comments are overwhelmingly positive, with most of the complaints having to do with iRiver's customer service.
