Microsoft released the Zune HD (*Est. $180 for 16 GB) and simultaneously discontinued all previous Zune MP3 players. Many of the older Zune models are still widely available at Amazon.com and other retailers, but Microsoft has confirmed that it will not be replenishing stock once those sell out. Luckily for Zune fans, the Zune HD earns excellent reviews, although it is significantly more expensive than older Zune players. If you want to get a good deal on an old Zune, experts say it's a great choice for a high-capacity MP3 player, especially if you don't already have a collection of music on iTunes. However, they also say that there's no reason iPod users -- especially those with extensive iTunes libraries -- should run out and buy a Zune.
Although the first Microsoft Zune met lots of scorn from reviewers, more recent models have received widespread coverage and much more favorable -- even glowing -- evaluations. Good destinations for reports include CNET, PCMag.com and Laptop Magazine. ConsumerReports.org comes through with its typical well-balanced ratings, but much less critical discussion. User reviews can be found at Amazon.com.
