MP3 Players: Ratings of Sources
Total of 25 Sources
For an explanation of how we rank reviews, see our ratings criteria page.
MP3 Players
by Editors of CNET
Our AssessmentCNET is one of the best sources for reviews of MP3 players. The reviews are current, detailed and balanced; it's also easy to tell which MP3 players receive the best ratings. Senior editor Donald Bell reviews most MP3 players at CNET, rating each one a 5-point scale. The latest Apple iPod touch earns an Editors' Choice award, but the iPod nano receives lower ratings. Among budget MP3 players, the SanDisk Sansa Fuze+ and Sansa Clip+ get high marks.
MP3 Players
by Tim Gideon
Our AssessmentThe reviews at PCMag.com are detailed and relatively comparative, and there's enough variation in ratings to tell which MP3 players rise above the pack. Several recently reviewed MP3 players earn Editors' Choice awards from PCMag.com, including the new iPod touch and the Archos 3cam vision. Although it loses out on the Editors' Choice award to the iPod touch, the Microsoft Zune HD also gets a high rating. No inexpensive MP3 player has been able to displace last year's SanDisk Sansa Clip+ as the best budget choice.
MP3 and Video Player Reviews
by Editors of Laptop Magazine
Our AssessmentLaptop Magazine covers all things mobile, including MP3 players. Reviews are competent and occasional comparisons are made. However, Laptop Magazine tests fewer MP3 players than PCMag.com or CNET. In fact, only three MP3 players have been evaluated in the past year. The latest versions of the iPod shuffle and iPod touch earn Editors' Choice awards.
Reviews
by Editors of PC Advisor
Our AssessmentPC Advisor, a British magazine, reviews more MP3 players than many competing technology sites. Reviews are lengthy and balanced, although not on par with the analysis at top-rated sources like CNET or PCMag.com. Among MP3 players reviewed recently, the fourth-generation iPod touch gets the highest rating. Some of the reviews here are duplicates of reviews posted at Macworld.
iPods and MP3 Players
by Editors of ConsumerReports.org
Our AssessmentConsumerReports.org conducts thorough tests on dozens of MP3 players, rating each player on criteria such as audio quality, ease of use, damage resistance and headphone quality. Seven MP3 players are recommended. Although testing is top-notch, there is little commentary or analysis to accompany the ratings. In addition, ConsumerReports.org has yet to test the new Apple iPods.
MP3 Players
by Editors of PC World
Our AssessmentPC World has a decent number of reviews for MP3 players, but it has yet to test the new Apple iPod touch. Reviewers are relatively lengthy, and pros and cons are clearly noted. Each MP3 player receives a rating on a five-point scale. The newest Apple iPod shuffle and the Creative Zen X-Fi get high marks.
Reviews
by Jeremy Horwitz
Our AssessmentILounge.com provides some of the most detailed reviews of MP3 players we've seen. Each review is full of analysis and comparisons to other models. MP3 players are rated on a letter scale, but there is little variation in ratings -- most products earn some form of recommendation. ILounge.com only tests Apple MP3 players and it's still one of the best sources of information on the iPod family.
Latest Reviews
by Editors of Trusted Reviews.com
Our AssessmentBritain's TrustedReviews.com has very detailed, multi-page reviews of electronic equipment, including MP3 players. MP3 players are rated on various criteria, and the best players earn a TR Recommended award. The new iPod touch wins that award. The latest iPod nano and the Archos 5 Internet Tablet earn high ratings, but not an award.
Reviews
by Editors of Engadget.com
Our AssessmentEngadget.com has excellent technology reviews, and the site has recently launched a new rating system that makes it easier to compare products. Although Engadget.com doesn't review as many MP3 players as sources we rate higher, editors do have solid, test-based reviews of the new iPod nano and iPod touch.
MP3/video player
by Editors of PC Pro
Our AssessmentPC Pro has a good selection of MP3 player reviews, although many of the players are not widely available in the United States. The analysis is relatively detailed, and each MP3 player is rated on a 6-point scale. The Apple iPod touch gets a high rating, as does the Cowon J3. PC Pro also has a higher opinion of the new iPod nano than most reviewers.
Reviews
by Grahm Skee
Our AssessmentAnythingButiPod.com has detailed reviews of non-iPod MP3 players, complete with illustrations and some comparisons. Products aren't rated, but the site offers great analysis on several popular MP3 players and accessories, like speaker docks.
iPods
by Editors of Macworld
Our AssessmentNot surprisingly given its focus, Macworld reviews only iPod MP3 players. Reviews contain good details, and each product is rated on a five-point scale. Like most reviewers, Macworld gives high ratings to the latest iPod touch. The iPod shuffle also gets high marks. However, the iPad nano scores lower, earning an average score of 3.5 stars (out of 5).
Reviews
by Editors of ArsTechnica.com
Our AssessmentArsTechnica.com has some of the most detailed computer and electronic reviews available, but it covers fewer MP3 players than other sources. Editors have a lengthy analysis of the latest iPod nano, and they also compare the iPod touch's camera to that of the iPhone 4. There is no rating system, but the reviews provide lots of details on the new MP3 players.
Reviews
by Editors of Electronista.com
Our AssessmentElectronista.com contains thoughtful, detailed reviews of the latest electronic gadgets. Reviews are lengthy and illustrated with multiple photos, and each product is rated. Some comparisons between models are also included within the lengthy write-ups.
MP3 Players
by Editors of Pocket-Lint.com
Our AssessmentThis British technology site has solid single-product reviews of MP3 players. A number of players are tested recently, including most of the new iPods. Editors rate each player on a 10-point scale, and photos illustrate most reviews. The Apple iPod touch gets the highest ratings. Several recommended MP3 players are not widely available in the United States.
Reviews
by Editors of T3.com
Our AssessmentAlthough it is less detailed than some other expert sources, T3.com has a good number of recent MP3 player reviews. There are several single-product reviews available, including of the Archos 3cam vision and new iPod nano. Most MP3 players get similar average ratings, but the iPod touch is the only recently reviewed player to earn a five-star rating.
MP3 Players & Accessories
by Contributors to Amazon.com
Our AssessmentMany popular MP3 players get lots of user feedback on Amazon.com. Most of the highest-rated MP3 players are older or discontinued models, which makes Amazon.com less helpful in evaluating new models. On the positive side, if you read deep into reviews, you'll find some nuggets of wisdom about ease of use or durability that typically don't turn up in professional reviews. That makes Amazon.com certainly worth a stop once you've narrowed down your choices.
MP3 and Media Player Reviews
by Editors of DigitalTrends.com
Our AssessmentDigitalTrends.com doesn't review many MP3 players, and editors have yet to look at the latest Apple iPods. Reviews are excellent -- detailed, thorough and based on hands-on testing. Each MP3 player gets a rating out of 10. Both the SanDisk Sansa Fuze+ and Microsoft Zune HD get high ratings. It was reviewed last year, but the SanDisk Sansa Clip+ earns an Editors' Choice award and is still widely available.
Review: Apple's iPod Updates
by Arik Hesseldahl
Our AssessmentArik Hesseldahl reviews three of the latest iPods -- the nano, touch and shuffle -- for Businessweek. The iPods aren't rated, but Hesseldahl's balanced analysis is worth a read. He also compares the new players to the previous generations.
Review: iPod Touch, iPod Nano, and iPod Shuffle
by MG Siegler
Our AssessmentMG Siegler doesn't rate the latest iPods, but his test-based observations are interesting nonetheless. He walks through his observations on the latest iPod nano, shuffle and touch. The article is accompanied by pictures and includes comparisons between the devices.
Media Players
by Editors of Wired
Our AssessmentWired hasn't covered many MP3 players recently, but the latest Apple iPod touch gets high ratings. The new iPod nano is also tested, but it gets lower ratings. Wired's reviews offer fewer details than other sources, but the analysis is balanced and clearly lists pros and cons. Each MP3 player is rated on a 10-point scale.
MP3 Players
by Editors of GoodGearGuide.com.au
Our AssessmentThis Australian site covers a wide range of products and gives star ratings. Some reviews, however, are reposts from sister publications, such as PC World (U.S.), and many discontinued models remain on the site. In addition, a number of links to the full reviews are broken. The Apple iPod touch is the only recent MP3 player that earns an Editors' Choice award, but others from Cowon and Sony also get high marks.
MP3 and Portable Media Player Reviews
by Editors of ComputerShopper.com
Our AssessmentComputerShopper.com used to be a comprehensive source for MP3 player reviews, but it has reviewed only two players in 2010. It also has yet to test the latest crop of iPods. The test-based reviews are detailed, and editors employ a rating system and give an Editors' Choice award to the best players. One MP3 player that earns this award is the SanDisk Sansa Clip+. It was released in 2009, but experts say it's still one of the best budget MP3 players.
MP3 Players
by Editors of Which? magazine
Our AssessmentBritain's Which? magazine, which conducts Consumer Reports-like testing, tests nearly 90 MP3 players in this review. Although testing is stellar and well-documented, it appears that this article hasn't been updated in more than a year. Which? magazine hasn't tested any of the new iPods, and many of its Best Buys are now discontinued.
Audio Players
by Editors of Outside magazine
Our AssessmentOutside magazine probably isn't the first source you would check for MP3 player reviews, because its reviews are focused on outdoor gear and equipment. There are a few MP3 players reviewed, but commentary is pretty brief, although it is based on testing. The Microsoft Zune HD attracts a positive review.
