Best 5 MP3 Players
by Donald Bell
Our Assessment

Donald Bell names his five favorite MP3 players here, and CNet.com also keeps updated lists of top hard-drive, flash memory, compact and budget players. Numerical ratings make it easy to compare models, and the best players are recognized with an Editors' Choice award. The latest iPod nano is complimented for its new features and attractive design. The 120 GB Microsoft Zune is the preferred hard-drive player for "tremendous value." Sony's NWZ-S738F Walkman gets an Editor's Choice award for quality sound and noise-cancelling capabilities.

MP3 Players
by Editors of PC Magazine
Our Assessment

PC Magazine reviews MP3 players in single-player reports and occasional multi-player roundups. The reports are logical and easy to read, but the magazine doesn't cover as many players as CNet.com. Reviewer Tim Gideon says the latest Apple iPod nano "easily earns our Editors' Choice" for design, screen quality and interface. The Microsoft Zune 120 GB hard-drive player is preferred over the Apple iPod classic, and Gideon recommends the Samsung YP-U3 as a worthy low-budget buy.

MP3 Players
by Editors of Which? magazine
Our Assessment

Based in the U.K., Which? magazine rates consumer products much like Consumer Reports in the U.S. They test 257 MP3 players and choose 100 Best Buys, but each version of a player -- even if the only difference is capacity -- is listed separately. Both the latest iPod nano and iPod classic 120 GB are named Best Buys, though Which? editors admit sound quality is unchanged from previous generations. They prefer the Samsung YP-U3 over SanDisk's Sansa Clip for those on a budget.

iPods & MP3 Players
by Editors of Consumer Reports
Our Assessment

Consumer Reports' most recent MP3 update is a comprehensive affair covering 35 flash and hard-drive MP3 players, although some of them are variations of the same product (separate listings for players with different song capacities). Ratings are clear and well explained, but there isn't a lot of discussion about individual MP3 players. While some content on the site is free, ratings are only available to subscribers.

MP3 and Video Player Reviews
by Editors of Laptop magazine
Our Assessment

Laptop magazine covers all things mobile, including MP3 players. Reviews are competent and occasional comparisons are made. Ratings range from one to five stars with the best earning Editors' Choice designations. The latest Apple iPod nano is commended for its updated design and features. Microsoft's 120 GB Zune also gets an Editors' Choice and is recommended over the iPod classic 120 GB because of its quality screen, wireless capabilities and features that help you discover new music.

Ten MP3 Players -- All Under $150
by Daniel S. Evans
Our Assessment

Although Daniel Evans doesn't compare the 10 models in this roundup of low-price MP3 players; he highlights a few top picks, and all players are linked to PC Magazine's full reviews (listed above). He recommends the iPod shuffle as an "ultracheap" choice, though the Creative Zen Stone Plus is a better value with FM radio and equalizer capabilities. If you want a cheap video-capable player, the SanDisk Sansa View has a decent 2.4-inch screen.

Top 10 MP3 Players (Flash-Based)
by Editors of PC World
Our Assessment PC World provides a 10-best list of flash-based MP3 players. Ratings are derived from both hands-on evaluations by editors and formal lab testing. The Creative Zen X-Fi earns top marks for its value, sound quality and impressive list of features. The new Creative Zen model doesn't fall too far behind with its ability to support lots of file formats and its wide range of features.

Portable Multimedia
by Editors of GoodGearGuide
Our Assessment

This Australian site covers a wide range of products and gives star ratings. Some reviews, however, are reposts from sister publications, such as PC World (U.S.), and many discontinued models remain on the site. Not all players reviewed are available in the U.S. Reviewers go into details about sound quality and label the iRiver Lplayer and SanDisk Sansa Fuze as Best Buys. They also give the Samsung YP-U3 their highest rating for smooth bass and great detail at a low price.

Ten of the Best iPod Rivals
by Alun Taylor
Our Assessment This U.K.-based website, associated with technology news site The Register, has electronics reviews. This roundup covers 10 non-iPod MP3 players. Alun Taylor provides some feedback on sound and video quality but tends to focus more on ease of use. The SanDisk Sansa Fuze is an Editor's Choice because it packs high sound quality and ease of use into a reasonably priced player.

MP3 Players
by Contributors to Amazon.com
Our Assessment

Most of the popular MP3 players get lots of user feedback. Unfortunately, most also get very positive ratings, making Amazon.com not as helpful as it could be in spotting which are the very best. On the positive side, if you read deep into reviews, you'll find some nuggets of wisdom about ease of use or durability that typically don't turn up in professional reviews. That makes Amazon.com certainly worth a stop once you've narrowed down your choices.

MP3 Player Reviews
by Editors of AnythingButiPod.com
Our Assessment

If you're looking for an MP3 player that's not an iPod, this is a good site to check. The reviews are up to date and fairly comprehensive. While there are no ratings or editors' recommendations, reviewers do a detailed run-through, from what's in the package to firmware updates. You can also watch videos of the reviewer playing with the device to see what it's like. While there seems to be some reluctance to be overly critical, weaknesses are discussed.

MP3 Reviews Index
by Editors of Trusted Reviews
Our Assessment

This U.K.-based electronics review site covers a good range of players, though not all are available to U.S. consumers. There's a 10-point rating system, although most get a seven or eight. A few players get a Recommended designation, like Apple's fourth-generation nano, though the reviewer likes its design more than sound quality or new features. iRiver's Lplayer has impressive sound quality, while SanDisk's Sansa Clip and Creative's Zen Stone perform well for the price.

MP3 Players
by Staff of PC Advisor
Our Assessment

The British magazine PC Advisor includes star ratings, but many MP3 players are rated highly. Although there are Gold and Best Buy awards, you have to view the full text to see which ones they are. We also found review quality uneven. The review for the Gold-awarded SanDisk Sansa Fuze, for instance, is unhelpful. The SanDisk Sansa Clip gets a Gold award for value, and the Apple iPod 120 GB classic is a solid high-capacity choice.

MP3 Players Reviews
by Editors of Pocket-lint
Our Assessment

Pocket-lint is an "independent gadget news and reviews" U.K. site. They have a 10-point rating system, but most models get a score of eight with no Editors' Choice picks. Still, they give a useful summary of good and bad points. Apple's newest iPod nano gets a nine, though it lacks features such as an FM tuner and microSD card expansion. The Creative Zen Stone Plus also gets a high rating for delivering quality sound at a cheap price.

iPod Product Guide
by Editors of Macworld
Our Assessment

Predictably, Macworld covers iPods only, but their reviews are detailed. Since the magazine is Mac-friendly, they all get a high rating. Each review, however, goes deeply into the nuts and bolts of the player, with special attention to differences between generations. Dan Frakes agrees with other reviewers that the latest iPod nano isn't worth an upgrade from the previous generation. Though a solid high-capacity choice, Macworld wasn't impressed with the 120 GB iPod classic either.

Top Rated Reviews: MP3 & Media Players
by Editors of Digital Trends
Our Assessment The reviews at Digital Trends provide good detail with strong and weak points, a conclusion and a rating. Players rated at least 8.5 (out of 10) are Editors' Choice, but they're all old models except for the new Apple iPod touch. Coverage is less extensive than at other sites.
17. ITReviews.co.uk

MP3 Player and Multimedia Player Reviews
by Editors of IT Reviews
Our Assessment

IT Reviews is a U.K. site with well-written MP3 player reviews, but not many recent models are covered. Also, not all players are available in the United States. It's not obvious from the review listings which players are recommended; you have to view each one to find out. The SanDisk Sansa Fuze and Creative Zen Stone Plus are recommended for quality sound at a reasonable price. SanDisk's Sansa View is also "fantastic value for money."

Digital music players: Noteworthy digital music players
by Tessa Breneman
Our Assessment

In this article for Smart Computing magazine, Tessa Breneman discusses five noteworthy MP3 players. Although she doesn't compare them or recommend one over another, there's useful input about strengths and weaknesses. Not surprisingly, the more expensive Sony Walkman NWZ-S718FBNC, which includes noise-cancelling earphones, and Microsoft's Zune 80 GB player are praised for excellent sound quality and video playback. However, the SanDisk Sansa View, iRiver E100 and Archos 105 are worthy choices at a lower price point.

MP3 Players Reviews and Prices
by Editors of ConsumerGuide.com
Our Assessment These MP3 player reviews are a mixed bag. The best reviews touch briefly on the important points, but others are little more than a description of features. No new MP3 player reviews have been posted since April, and many discontinued players remain listed. On the bright side, an Expert Rating Scale lists five categories that give you an idea of how the reviewer rated different features.

MP3 Players
by Contributors to Epinions.com
Our Assessment Like Amazon.com, Epinions.com is a site where you can read user reviews of products of all kinds. There are more reviews for iPods than for other players, but that's to be expected considering their popularity. Most MP3 players get much less feedback here than at Amazon.com. Those that get a significant number of reviews (more than 10) tend to be older models.
