PCMag.com has a helpful buyer's guide to iPod speakers that covers audio quality, portability and what features to look for. Several iPod speaker systems are also recommended in the article.
As an alternative to an iPod speaker dock, you can also use Bluetooth speakers to wirelessly stream music from your iPhone or iPod touch (as long as it uses iPhone OS 3.0 or later and supports the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile or AADP). Macworld has a review roundup of Bluetooth speakers, complete with ratings.
At the online Apple Store, you can also search for current iPod speakers by iPod compatibility.
IPod-centric websites (iLounge.com, iPodObserver.com, etc.) are great sources for reviews, but they also serve as a good resource for the latest news about speakers and everything else iPod-related. Most have user forums as well, and the one at iLounge.com includes an active subforum on in-home solutions.
You'll also find specifications and compatibility information at manufacturers' websites:
