The Brother MFC-9440CN gets respect in reviews as a multifunction small-office printer -- experts say it's fast and durable, with a monthly duty cycle of 35,000 copies. PCMag.com says it's the fastest color laser all-in-one printer at its price and prints text crisply. Oddly, there's no duplexing (printing on both sides automatically), but this is available on the otherwise-identical Brother MFC-9450CDN (*Est. $630). It's too heavy (about 72 pounds) and a bit noisy for most home users, reviews say, and photos come out a bit grainy (typical of a laser printer). The Brother MFC-9440CN can scan and fax in color, but as a four-ink printer, it's not as accurate as inkjet models with six inks. It can reduce and enlarge documents from 25 to 400 percent. If you don't need color, reviews call the Brother MFC-7840W (*Est. $280) the best monochrome multifunction printer at its price. Its monthly duty rating is 10,000 pages.
PCMag.com, CNET and PC World offer the best coverage of the Brother MFC-9440CN, basing their overall scores on thorough testing. ConsumerReports.org focuses more on the home market and doesn't review the Brother MFC-9440CN. Over 40 owner reviews at Amazon.com are generally positive, though some indicate that noise is a problem.

Our Sources
PCMag.com does thorough testing and rates the Brother MFC-9440CN as "good," despite unimpressive print quality. But it's fast and offers a lot of features for the money, says reviewer M. David Stone, including scanning and faxing to and from PCs over a network.

2. CNET
CNET says the combination of speed and print quality warrants an Editors' Choice rating for the Brother MFC-9440CN. But it notes the lack of an automatic duplex printing option and the color quality could stand some slight improvement. About 25 owner reviews rate it a bit lower.
Review: Brother MFC-9440CN, Felisa Yang, Aug. 23, 2007
PC World runs the Brother MFC-9440CN through numerous lab tests and rates it "very good," saying it offers fast, good text printing. "Mainstream office users probably won't mind its grainy photo quality, but anyone seeking finer results might consider the Xerox Phaser 6180MFP" (*Est. $750), says reviewer Melissa Riofrio.

4. IT Business
This widely reprinted review says it's courtesy of PC World Canada, but we couldn't confirm that. Reviewer Jeff Jedras says: "At its price point I feel an LCD interface should have been a given. However, it is a robust and durable machine that delivers quality output at good speeds."

5. Amazon.com
Over 40 owner reviews combine to give the Brother MFC-9440CN a good average score, most scoring it a 4 or the maximum 5, with a few sharply critical reviews (no real consensus on those). Even some who like the MFC-9440CN say it's heavy and noisy.
