Good color laser, November 20, 2009

This is a good color laser printer. I have been using deskjets for ever and finally got tired of buying cartridges. I am still learning all the features, so it would not be fair to comment on everything. One feature that I really like is that you can insert a stack of papers to the top feeder Adobe will make a pdf automatically out of them all. The only thing I do not like so far, is that it takes quite a while for the first document to print. Otherwise, this is a good printer and would recommend it.

Good, not great, September 16, 2009

We've had this unit for about six months, and we've learned to live with it. The best thing about it is that it isn't from HP, which inexplicably seems to own the market for units such as this despite lousy products. Speed: takes a long time to get the first page of a job out, but it moves pretty quickly once it gets going. First page coming from standby seems to take over 30 seconds, but I haven't timed it with a watch. Color: dull, muddy, and the feed wheels leave tracks in the ink over dark color patches. We diddled our logo colors to work with the thing, but when we want something bright and snazzy, we use a Canon inkjet we keep around just for that. Document Feeder: works pretty well, doesn't scan edge to edge as one previous reviewer noticed. Doesn't jam though. Paper feeder: doesn't feed straight. Takes some practice to use. Envelopes: a total disaster. Mangles them. Toner life: I believe the claim that it's using color to print black and white, since we seem to go through color cartridges pretty fast, and we do mostly black and white printing. I don't know if I'd buy another one, I'm hoping by the time this one dies, something better will be on the market.

A small business workhorse, August 5, 2009

We've owned this printer for over a year now. We're a real estate business so the volume of paper we have to print is staggering. We added a second tray for legal size paper and added memory to the max. The bottom line is this printer is a true workhorse for a small business. Not once has it jammed. Copies are easy. Scanning is even easier and also very fast compared to other multi-function scanners I've used. It will scan legal size paper by adjusting the software. Faxing is easy. It runs day and night without a problem. I have no hesitation recommending this unit and I would definitely purchase again. My only complaint is the toner life. I noticed several comments about a short toner life. If you search the Internet you'll find more than one solution to the problem. The solution I used is easy and allows you to use all of the toner in the cartridges. 1. With power on, open the toner access main door (You will get a "door open" message in the LCD.) 2. Hit the "Clear/Back" button and... ta-dah!!! you go right to the "Toner Reset Menu" (cue Vienna Boy's choir sounds here). 3. Using the up ^ Down > "Search" arrow buttons you can then scroll through reset options for each of the printer's [4] toner cartridges! Code: B. = black; C. = cyan; M. = magenta and Y. = yellow 4. For each for these cartridges is the option to reset for low yield = S (small?) or High Yield - H 5. Using the number keypad, select option #1 (to reset each to the size you have installed. 6. Hit the "Clear/Back" button to get out of the menu, close door and the problem is FINALLY solved. The process may be slightly different for other models but the basics are the same. I did not come up with this process, I found it online. Try it, it may save you money like it does for me.

Wonderful Printer, July 4, 2009

This printer was easy to set up and functions flawlessly. If you set it to monochrome it does not use color toners. If your color toner cartridges are empty and it is set to print monochrome, the printer will still print. The cartridges do not cost $100 each, you can get them much cheaper if you shop around. The average printing costs are as advertised or cheaper than advertised. It also has a toner saver setting that works very well with a high quality output. This printer is a workhorse that was designed for small workgroups but heavy use. Scanning, faxing and copying functions all work well. Color printing is not top of the line, but is adequate for non-glossy brochures, flyers, etc., and top quality color printers are much more expensive. This printer was also recommended by CNET. We have not noticed any dimming of the lights when the printer first comes on and it is not very noisy. We are very happy with our purchase.

Works Perfectly!, June 28, 2009

We got a 9440CN five months ago to replace our fifth(!) HP multifunction which had failed!! Our experience with HP laser printers has been excellent. Our experience with HP multifunctions is poor! My wife is a CPA with a home office. The Brother has worked perfectly! Software setup is easy. Unlike the HP's, the software has remained stable. I hooked it up to one computer through USB and allowed printer sharing. Works fine! The mechanism for feeding originals to copy, scan, or fax is robust. Everything has fed perfectly! I was particularly sensitive to this since the HP mechanisms were dinky and unreliable. Different parts of five different HP multifunctions each failed within a year of so. Print quality is excellent although this is not a printer to print glossy pictures. (Brother warns that even paper advertised as laser glossy will gum up the works.)

1. PCMag.com

PCMag.com does thorough testing and rates the Brother MFC-9440CN as "good," despite unimpressive print quality. But it's fast and offers a lot of features for the money, says reviewer M. David Stone, including scanning and faxing to and from PCs over a network.

2. CNET

CNET says the combination of speed and print quality warrants an Editors' Choice rating for the Brother MFC-9440CN. But it notes the lack of an auto duplexer and that the color quality could stand some slight improvement. About 20 owner reviews rate it a bit lower.

3. PC World

PC World runs the Brother MFC-9440CN through numerous lab tests and rates it "very good," saying it offers fast, good text printing. "Mainstream office users probably won't mind its grainy photo quality, but anyone seeking finer results might consider the Xerox Phaser 6180MFP (*Est. $750)," says reviewer Melissa Riofrio.

4. IT Business

This widely reprinted review says it's courtesy of PC World Canada, but we couldn't confirm that. Reviewer Jeff Jedras says: "At its price point I feel an LCD interface should have been a given. However, it is a robust and durable machine that delivers quality output at good speeds."

5. Amazon.com

About 30 owner reviews combine to give the Brother MFC-9440CN a good average score, most scoring it a four or the maximum five, with a few sharply critical reviews (no real consensus on those). Even some who like the Brother MFC-9440CN say it's heavy and noisy.
