Reviews say the Canon Pixma MP490 is the best choice if you don't want to spend more than $100 on a multifunction inkjet printer without a fax -- it is one of the cheapest MFPs currently available. Testing indicates slow print speeds, though there has been slight improvement over the previous model, the Pixma MP480. Reviewers say the Canon Pixma MP490 is fine as a basic inkjet printer and copier, producing good photos and very good documents. There are two ink cartridges, one black and one tricolor -- replacing both costs about $80, about the same cost as the printer, and experts warn that this makes the Pixma MP490 a poor value for those who print often.
The Canon Pixma MP490 gets good coverage from PC World, and from TrustedReviews.com and PC World (Australia). We found a fair amount of owner reviews at Amazon.com as well, most of which are highly complimentary.

The Canon Pixma MP490 is one of PC World's current top 10 printers, getting 4 out of 5 stars in this review. Susan Silvius finds that the PixmaMP490 performs well, considering its bargain price. She warns that ink costs are prohibitive, concluding that they "are bearable if you print infrequently; otherwise, look for a model with lower-cost inks (and a higher purchase price), such as HP's Officejet Pro 6500 Wireless" (*Est. $130).

The Australian version of PC World does its own review of the Canon Pixma MP490 and gives it 3.5 out of 5 stars. James Hutchinson says the print speeds are improved over the older Pixma MP480 (which he also reviewed). A chart detailing the performance statistics of a variety of other similar printers is also provided. Hutchinson isn't thrilled with the LCD screen or dearth of features, but "as a basic printer, scanner and copier, the Pixma MP490 will do the job well."

The Canon Pixma MP490 gets a Recommended designation. Simon Williams notes that Canon has been improving print speeds; while the Pixma MP490 remains "a little on the slow side," that's mostly due to warm-up times. Williams adds that with the good print quality, the Pixma MP490 "should be at the top of your short list" if you're looking for a budget multifunction printer.
