The Canon Pixma MP980 lacks a fax and really isn't designed for office work. Rather, it's a printer/scanner/copier for those who take and print lots of photos. It can scan and copy 35 mm film and slides with an included adapter. The Canon Pixma MP980 also has a 3.5-inch LCD screen for previewing and editing photos, and a straight paper path option for heavier stock (like photo paper). Furthermore, reviewers say it prints black-and-white photos especially well because there's a light gray among the six ink cartridges. One quibble in tests is that although there's wired and wireless connectivity, you have to choose -- you can't have both hookups simultaneously. Text printing isn't the Pixma's strong suit, however. If you want a fax and need more of a document printer, the HP Photosmart Premium Fax C309 (*Est. $250) is most frequently recommended in reviews as the best all-around printer, but it lacks film and slide scanning and has a smaller LCD preview screen.

PCMag.com offers the best review of the Canon Pixma MP980 and provides a basis for comparison with other multifunction printers. We'd rank ConsumerReports.org's coverage higher than we do, except it rates the older Canon Pixma MP970, and the big difference between the two is the gray ink for better black-and-white photos. Imaging-Resource.com and TrustedReviews.com test thoroughly but don't make it easy to compare models. There are about 80 owner reviews at Amazon.com for the Canon Pixma MP980 all-in-one printer, but the complaints about compatibility cover just about every operating system, so it's hard to tell what may be user error.

Our Sources

1. PCMag.com

PCMag.com says the Canon Pixma MP980 earns an Editors' Choice rating because of its exceptional photo prints and its ability to scan and print from slides and negatives. Writer M. David Stone says network installation is "clumsy" though, and you need to choose between wireless and wired hookup -- you can't do both. Text printing is merely adequate.

2. Imaging-Resource.com

In a review geared to photographers, Mike Pasini gives the Canon Pixma MP980 "outright prolonged applause" overall, praising it as a photo printer. "More remarkable," says Pasini, "was the excellent quality of the film scans, far better than anything we've seen in a multifunction device or even an inexpensive flatbed scanner."

3. TrustedReviews.com

TrustedReviews.com tests speed and print costs, assigning numerical scores in various categories. Overall, the Canon Pixma MP980 scores well, but Simon Williams says duplex printing is slow and black-and-white prints are a bit pricy. Color printing costs are good though.

4. PC World

While PC World's full review is somewhat cursory, the test results are helpful. Reviewer Melissa Riofrio thinks that the MP980 will please photo enthusiasts, but she finds it a bit too expensive for the average user. She also feels it is rather slow.

5. ConsumerReports.org

ConsumerReports.org tests, ranks and reviews the older Canon Pixma MP970 but not the Canon Pixma MP980 among the approximately 40 multifunction printers it covers. So while reviews of the older model are somewhat helpful, changes in the ink cartridges for the new model mean that print-quality scores aren't as relevant.

6. Amazon.com

About a quarter of the more than 80 owner reviews rate the Canon Pixma MP980 lower than four out of five stars. Most of the complaints concern difficult setup or compatibility issues (but those run the gamut between Mac, Linux and Windows Vista users).
